Maine GOP Forced To Apologize After Convention-Goers Vandalize An Eighth-Grade Classroom
http://thinkprogress.org/2010/05/14/maine-classroom-gop/

Although Maine is known for its two moderate Republican senators — Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins — last week’s state GOP convention showed the growing influence of far-right activists. An “overwhelming majority of delegates” voted to “scrap the the proposed party platform and replace it with a document created by a group of Tea Party activists.” Maine Politics called it “a mix of right-wing fringe policies, libertarian buzzwords and outright conspiracy theories.”

The Republican convention was at the Portland Expo, but participants went to the nearby King Middle School to hold their caucuses. While there, they went through eighth-grade teacher Paul Clifford’s items, opened sealed boxes, stole a prized poster, and vandalized the room with Republican slogans. Some details on what they did:

– For seven years, Clifford has had “a collage-type poster depicting the history of the U.S. labor movement” on his classroom door. He uses it “to teach his students how to incorporate collages into their annual project on Norman Rockwell’s historic ‘Four Freedoms’ illustrations.” When Clifford returned to his classroom on Monday, after the GOP caucuses, the poster was gone; in its place was a sticker reading, “Working People Vote Republican.”

– Republicans opened a “closed cardboard box they found near Clifford’s desk” and later objected to the fact that it contained copies of the U.S. Constitution donated to the school by the American Civil Liberties Union.

– After the caucuses, “rank-and-file Republicans who were upset by what they said they had seen in Clifford’s classroom” began calling the school, objecting to student art they had seen and a sticker on a filing cabinet reading “People for the American Way — Fight the Right.”

Although some of these callers said they supported the fact that Clifford’s poster had been stolen, the Maine Republican Party’s leadership has taken a more conciliatory approach, apologizing to the school and promising to return any stolen materials it finds. “King Middle School was kind enough to allow the (party) to use their facilities and we are deeply concerned about the lack of respect shown to the faculty,” said Maine GOP Executive Director Christie-Lee McNally. Local Knox County GOP Chairman William Chapman agreed that the vandalism was inappropriate, but added that it was disturbing that there was “nothing” in Clifford’s room “that appeared to give a more balanced view.”

Even some students are appalled by the GOP caucus-goers’ behavior. Simon Johnson, a graduate of Clifford’s eighth-grade class, wrote an open letter saying that Maine Republicans had gone too far:

I am an unapologetic graduate of Paul Clifford’s eighth grade English class at King Middle School. I participated in the “Four Freedoms” expedition, and I made a poster decrying war quite similar to the one with which the Republicans took issue.

I am not brainwashed, I am not a puppet, I am not anti-American or anti-religious, and I am certainly not stupid. Paul Clifford’s class taught me to think critically, to deductively reason and, if anything, to appreciate America for all the freedoms with which I am ensured on a daily basis.

Clearly, the Knox County Republicans — who took a cherished, pro-Labor poster from Clifford’s room and who now are making slanderous and uninformed claims about Clifford — have a different agenda.

The Portland Press Herald also said that it received “several” e-mails from students “decrying the behavior of their weekend guests.” “I am not being brainwashed in his class under any circumstances,” wrote one student. “I am being told that I have the right to my own opinion. … These people were adults and they were acting very immaturely.”

31. On the other hand.........
My 8 year old Grandson IS being BRAINWASHED, by his right leaning 1st grade teacher. I was appalled when at the holiday table he told me he was glad he was an American because those Europeans were so backward & old fashioned. ( Isn't it 5 or 6 years now since Rumsfeld was forced to step down?)
However his older sister ( My Grandaughter, not Rumsfeld's sister) weathered that right wing teacher & now in High School is VERY liberal; as are her peers even tho their parents much are more conservative.

41. It is prevalent in our schools.
My Daughter, while a student at our small town H.S. was often ridiculed, by her teachers, for her "liberal" views and papers. She is currently a college senior, recipient of the "Presidential Scholarship" and preparing to become a teacher. She has made the "Deans List" every semester. She used to get so upset with the ridicule. She has experienced it in College also. It has even been reflected in the subjective grading of some of her assignments. She has been fulfilling her student teaching requirements and has taught at different schools in Tn. She has taught at public, charter and private schools. I asked her where she would like to permanently teach. Her answer? A public school. The charter and private schools don't allow Unions for their teachers and are subsequently underpaying and over working their staffs. These profit motivated schools also, in her opinion, do not adequately educate their students and they all are biased against any individuality or anything that might interfere with their profits. It is terrible to watch the destruction of our (not for profit) public education system. The charter and public schools have so much more money available for advertising and sports, etc.. because they do not pay a living wage. IMO, all teachers are underpaid. The "privatization" of our education system is pathetic. Of course they cannot attract quality educators (passionate, motivated) because they refuse to allow any decent benefits or pay. The little that they offer is subject to change at any time. Their main goal is to produce young sociopaths who will become our future "captains of industry" and spread these unjust policies wherever they go. In the meantime, our public education is so underfunded that the teachers often have to furnish essential supplies for the children. Their budgets are secondary to the charter schools who receive much more subsidization, yet pay their staff far less. It is not surprising anymore, but doesn't anyone see how harmful and unsustainable it is? Just another form of privatized prisons. More money for the wealthy and less for the deserving. Thank you raygun and all of the ignorant proponents of this system.

68. You had me right up to "Their main goal is to produce ....'captains of industry'...."
That is far from the goal of the privatization of the public school system. Students and their best interests are nearly irrelevant.

As far as future captains of industry, quite frankly I doubt there will be many who emerge from the for-profit education model capable of it.

As if having those initials on the copies somehow tainted them. Dontcha know the ACLU is an evil liberal organization?

When I was a kid, the DAR distributed copies of the Constitution to our schools. That did not make it a right wing document. It was just a way for an organization that believed in the United States to contribute to the school system.

the rhetoric to the truth. I'm sure he will use it as a teaching movement and help them come to their own (obvious) conclusions about the actions and dogma of this group.

Objecting to copies of the U.S. Constitution in a U.S. History class for no other reason than the people who donated the copies: totally illogical and insane.

39% unaffiliated. That's a big pool of voters with no party identified. Apparently they lean republican since they keep electing those two senators. I'm assuming the 39% have more moderates than rightwingers unless they have gone the teabagger route in last year.

So the Tea Partiers vandalize a classroom in the name of ideological purity . . . and then complain about the lack of a "balanced view" in the teacher's room. Then again, their concept of balanced is from Fox News' "Fair and Balanced" reporting -- balanced between Right and Far-Right.

43. I have to wonder if any of these morons ever read the Constitution...
– Republicans opened a “closed cardboard box they found near Clifford’s desk” and later objected to the fact that it contained copies of the U.S. Constitution donated to the school by the American Civil Liberties Union.

Regardless of what entity provided said booklets, (I have a copy from the ACLU on my desk in front of me right now, the only thing in it that is not part of the document is on the cover, and the first page, identifying the ACLU as the provider, no commentary or anything like that) the point is, this man is willing to give his students copies to so they can see the document themselves.

I have several pamphlets from various organizations containing The Constitution, every one, except for the ACLU version, begins with a page or two of "opinion/comment" on the document. The one I have from the Heritage Foundation, printed in 1983 is pretty RW oriented in it's "comment".

For the record, I keep one copy of the ACLU version on my person to draw upon when I run into an ideologue that makes a "Constitutional Point" completely out of context...on many an occasion, when I ask for the reference, handing them the pamphlet, I realize it is the first time the individual has even seen the document.

If ignorance is bliss...there is dancing in the street...:D

One of their complaints was lack of balance, but look at what they did:
Censored, vandalized, searched, defaced and on and on.

I don't want that kind of behavior rewarded with any kind of balance.

AFAIC the balance here needs to be some serious community service and probation for the entire group who invaded that classroom. Even if they didn't participate actively, unless they tell the truth about who were the active participants they are all equally guilty.

And none of these articles even attempt to broach the subject of the school calling for an investigation and charging the caucus members in that room with misdemeanor theft and vandalism, etc. All this stuff about writing emails decrying what happened is bullshit nonsense. I bet if a group like Acorn had done something similar as part of a conference breakout session in a school classroom, the perps would have been hunted down, vigilante style and shoved 6ft UNDER the jail after being kicked and tased. :banghead:

48. these are the same kind of idiots who write 'give me all your money' on their own deposit slips

I always wondered which party those idiots were with - now I know. May as well break into someone's home and then complain how hard it was to rob because they couldn't locate the silver, jewelry drawer and safe.

How do these people survive in the real world ??

49. What do Snowe and Collins have to say about this?
I expect a public statement from those two leaders of the Classroom Vandals Party.

55. How is it that a political party was allowed to caucus in a public school? Did they pay?
Is this standard practice in Maine for all parties?

Not a criticism yet, it's just the first time I've heard this, and I know it wouldn't be done in some communities.

56. We do it here, too.
We always have the caucus and assembly in the local grade school. There aren't that many building is small towns that can accomodate 150 people.

57. They need jail time.
These people are savages. No one should be defending the material in that classroom. The focus needs to be on the CRIMES committed by Republicans in that classroom.

58. Did the school provide facilities to the party for free or was there a contract?
Why did they use classrooms instead of auditorium, gym, or other room other than a classroom?

What are the requirements imposed on a group using school facilities? Any fees for cleanup or providing access? If they didn't have such requirements why the hell not? The principal part of the fringe element?

Why weren't they able to caucus at the Expo? Aren't expos suppose to have sufficient space to accommodate group activities?

It doesn't say much about the values within the Republican Party when they condone invasion, theft, and destruction of privacy. They acted like college kids on spring break.

59. Nothing gave a "balanced" view?
Is there really a need to balance out one's worldview with the opinions of petulant asshats?

This seems to be a recent favorite when everybody starts to notice that the PR spin is a big stinking pile of elephant poo.
