For those who feel the grass is always greener... |
|
How many times have you heard this before on the Internet: "I hate where I live, and I'm going to move to where people are more liberal." Look at it this way: this is exactly what the GOP wants you to do. Remember that many (but not all) right-wingers are xenophobic and want nothing more than for liberals to go away. Moving someplace different isn't going to solve problems in your community, it is only going to make them worse. Canada and Earthquakistan are perfectly capable of managing themselves without more of us moving in, and going there will not change anything in an already polarized country.
What liberals really should be doing is move into more conservative areas. That is exponentially better than running away from your problems. These are the regions that are in dire need for help and support. It will change things for the better. Sure the people there are going to dislike you, but is there really a place where that doesn't happen? I thought so.
I've lived Savannah, Georgia for ten years and Cheyenne, Wyoming for another four. Since 2006 I have lived in a small town in Pennsylvania. Believe me when I say that Warren is by far the worst community I have ever lived in. It is the very meaning of the phrase "rust belt." There is nothing to do here, and the nearest place where you can do real shopping is in Erie, which is 100 kilometers away. There are lots of unfriendly people around here, and I have noticed more Confederate Flags here in this small region than I have in either Savannah or Cheyenne. To the rest of the civilized world we are rednecks. This is what happens when all the liberals leave a town.
From my experience, the South and Midwest are not as bad as you think they are. Most people, even in these regions, are not going to want to hurt you as long as you are nice to them.
So I give a call to all liberals who feel like moving away: do you want to make your community worse, or do you want to make another community better?

1. Everybody from PA knows that PA is very redneck in the non-metro areas. |
|
It's not really a liberal state, but blue because of blue-collar pro-union attitude.
