Study: Wine in plastic loses flavor
Study: Wine in plastic loses flavor

LONDON, May 14 (UPI) -- White wine stored in plastic bottles or boxes loses its flavor in six months but remains stable in glass bottles, a study found.

The chemical composition that gives white wine its flavor changes within six months of being put in plastic bottles or plastic-lined boxes, Britain's Daily Mail reported Friday.

Researchers at the Institute of Vine and Wine Sciences in Bordeaux, France, discovered alcohol oxidization in that time period if the wine is packed in single and multi-layer polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles or a bag-in-box configuration, the newspaper said.

White and red wine was found to be stable in glass bottles, the study said.

The wine institute scientists tested red and white Bordeaux wines that were contained in glass, single-layer PET, multi-layer PET and bag-in-box packaging before being stored in laboratory conditions, the Mail said.

1. Maybe THAT's why I hate most wines! Really, if wine is to be stored,

please do the drinker the favor of delivering it the best way it has been delivered to drinkers for over 1000 years! Glass or wood!

I am going to start a campaign to outlaw plastics, once I outlaw Republicanism. Both destroy taste, one for wine, one for democracy, by leaving an evil taste in one's mouth.

4. +1
I think soda tastes better out of glass (or even a can) as well. Thankfully, they've had little success at selling beer in plastic bottles. I think plastic should be used sparingly and shouldn't be used at all when packaging food and drinks.

12. OT, but if you just outlaw Fox News...
the Republicanism will just dry up and blow away. Plastics, on the other hand, are here to stay. Even after we're long gone.

:)

3. A poem
The taste of wine is something to savor
But put in plastic, it loses it flavor
And fish swim and little birdies fly
And loyal Bushies always, always lie.

10. You have inspired me to write a poem of my own.
Oh wine is so good
Stored in glass or in wood
Plastic's kinda evil
My favorite bug is the boll weevil

8.  Wine changes its flavor in plastic within seconds, which is why I refuse to drink out of plastic
wine glasses. I will bring my own glass to someone's house before I insult wine that way. Ugh.

Brings back memories!

Have to tell this story:

When I was in college in San Diego (early 1970s), I went on tour with the college band. We toured up the coast of California, performing in various places. Our final stop was San Francisco. After a hectic schedule of rehearsals and performances, we were ready to unwind on our last night. The next day it was back to San Diego.

Well, I wound up on the top floor of our hotel with another couple. I didn't know it at the time but I think they were warming up to each other, and really did't want me around. It was a kind of patio and we three were sitting at one of the tables when someone suggested we get some wine. I offered to go since I was 19 and, while under-aged, was able to pass for 21 (probably my beard). Anyway, I take the elevator down and walk out onto the street to look for the nearest liquor store. There was one not too far from the hotel and I walk in and look around.

Now, I had boughten beer from time to time but didn't have any knowledge of wine. Well, I look around at all these expensive labels on the shelves and think "Wow! Wine costs more than beer!" Then I noticed the cooler and there were a few wine labels in there and I notice that they were a lot less expensive than their counterparts out on the shelves.

I think, "What luck! Not only is it chilled, but it's very inexpensive!" I thought I'd hit a goldmine. I noticed the cheapest least-expensive wine was Thunderbird and it was only about a buck, buck.25 a bottle! So I pick up two bottles, pay for them, and head back to the hotel.

You should have seen the look on the face of the guy! He was a couple of years older than me and probably more worldly-wise. He looked at them and said something like, "Oh...'Thunderbird'" I said "It's okay, isn't it?" He said, "Uh...yeah."

We drank both bottles--I had one and the couple had part the other. It was like soda pop! After a few swigs it went down really smooth. I managed to find my way back to my room and spent the night on the floor of the bathroom.

Worse morning ever! And, after 38 years, I've not been able to even smell white, sweet wine without getting a nauseous feeling.

I imagine the couple had a pretty good time, though, after I left...
