Coach Sorry For Making Players Drink Out Of Shoe
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (AP) ― A South Tahoe High girl's softball coach has apologized for requiring any player who struck out in a May 1 game to drink soda pop out of a shoe, a school district official said.
Eight varsity players who struck out against Wooster of Reno in the game were required by coach Anneliese Neitling to drink soda from a member's softball shoe at a team slumber party that night.
Neitling did not return phone calls for comment.
James Tarwater, superintendent of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District, said the action was a young coach's mistake and an apology has been made.
"It was meant as a joke and obviously it went too far," he said, adding his office received a complaint from a parent.
Tarwater said the incident would be addressed during Neitling's postseason evaluation.
"People learn from mistakes," he told the Tahoe Daily Tribune. "She does a good job pulling the team together, morale-wise and support-wise."
