After seeing the cyclist shoot by a cop after being pulled over I decided to post what one should do

When pulled over by cops on a motorcycle.

1) pull to the shoulder of the road as quickly and safely as possible.

2) Do Not put the kick stand down, instead just sit on the bike until the cop comes up to you and you inform him that you need to put the kick stand down to get out your papers.

3) never ever get off the cycle unless so ordered by the cop.

4) Keep Your hands on the handlebars until the cop comes up and asks for your papers, if you shut the engine off, slowly lift 1 hand off the handlebars, keep your arm away from your body, reach down slowly turn the key off and put your hand back on the handlebar, remember keep your hand away from your body.

5) Do Not remove your helmet unless ordered by the cop, helmets can be used as a weapon and cops can use that as an excuse for their actions of violence.

6)Be aware that cops view motorcyclists as gang members even if you are not wearing patches or fit the outlaw biker stereo type, so keep in mind you are guilty of something just because you choose to ride a motorcycle.

These are hard, painful lessons that I learned after 30+ years of cycle riding and I have had close calls with police more then once in those years.

7. Beats getting a club to the head or knocked off the cycle or as in this case

shot. Never give cops an excuse and not all cops have camera's in their patrol cars. In make believe land you have rights, in the real world rights don't mean shit until you go before a judge. I had a cop smack my helmet because I had jumped off the bike and started removing the helmet, thats what he told the judge, I just got off the bike like I normally did. The judge threw out the ticket, the cop pulled me over because he thought the stock exhaust on my 63 Triumph was not up to 1987 standards. The judge then informed me that because I made an aggressive move by getting off the bike and removing my helmet the cop was in the right.

Then when you get home, take your hair dryer into the shower with you, and oh yes, when you want to light a fire in your fireplace be sure to use at least two gallons of gasoline.

11. That's what they would like, but here's what you should do.....

Pull safely to the right, leave seat belt on and keep hands on the wheel. That was good advice, and so was the rest of it, unless you have contraband in your car or have been smoking a doobie. In that case, only roll the window down an inch or so to talk to the officer. He is most likely going to ask you to exit the vehicle. Do so, but lock the doors of your car upon exiting. If he ask you why you locked the doors, tell him it's just a habit. At this point, he cannot search your vehicle without a warrant,unless there is contraband visible to him. If you are not visibly impaired and smoke does not roll from your door when you get out, he is likely not to ask for a warrant. It's a lot of trouble for him and could be embarassing to him if he finds nothing illegal. Comply with everything he tells you to do, but do not give permission to search. If you do not lock your doors, he can search the vehicle without a warrant. Most of the time you will get off with just a citation or a warning if you violated a traffic law. If he obtains a warrant, and that takes quite a bit of time, there is nothing you can do, so remain quiet and comply.

Officers have to obey the laws, too, and they are trained on how to trick you into unlocking your doors. They cannot take your keys and unlock the doors themselves. That is a violation of the law and constitutes an illeagal search. Remember, be as courteous as possible and also do not admit to any violations.

Phrases such as "You were going a little fast there, weren't you?", or "What's your hurry?" are ways they try to get you to admit to violating a law. Your response should be something like, "I wasn't aware I was going too fast" or something similar as long as you don't admit to doing anything wrong.

...cops are just people. Even good cops get edgy at times. Imagine an officer working an accident where some idiot was speeding and slammed into a car full of kids just prior to pulling you over. This happens everyday somewhere in America. It is hard for that officer not to be pissed at you for speeding after what he just saw, and he will likely be short or snippy with you. It's human nature. Keep this in mind the next time you are pulled over. You never know what that officer has just witnessed.

15. Calling someone on a motorcycle a "cyclist" -

can be thought of as a deliberate attempt to euphemize for effect.

Which is not to say that all bikers are bad-asses, because they aren't. But reality holds that behavior of groups like Hell's Angels, Pagans, et al, have fostered such a negative impression in the public mind that all bikers are subliminally thought of as guilty until proven innocent. So if bikers need to be extra cautious about their movements when stopped by cops they have the Angels and the Pagans to thank for it.
