Oil slick may be heading to Florida
Source: Press Association

Researchers tracking the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico say computer models show the black ooze may have already entered a major current flowing toward the Florida Keys, and are sending out a research vessel to learn more.

William Hogarth, dean of the University of South Florida's College of Marine Science, told The Associated Press that one model shows the oil has already entered the loop current, which is the largest in the Gulf. The model is based on weather, ocean current and spill data from the U.S. Navy and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, among other sources.

Hogarth said a second model shows the oil is three miles (4.8 kilometres) from the current - still dangerously close.

The current flows in a looping pattern in the Gulf, through the area where the blown-out well is, east to the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

This is the end of offshore drilling in America. I heard today that it cost up to $100 billion if hits the Gulf Coasts.

1. Boiled frog, anyone?
They've known it was going to be this bad from day one. They're just letting us know one bitter spoonful at a time.

2. This is NOT the end of offshore drilling in America.
Shell is on schedule to drill in the Chukchi Sea this summer.

4. Or not...

If the gusher in the GoM isn't under control by then, I am hoping for a moratorium to be placed on offshore drilling. I realize that probably will not happen because, as a civilization, we've painted ourselves into a corner. We simply cannot live without a constantly increasing supply of oil. And, like a heroin addict, we'll do anything to get it. Even if it means destroying the environment, warming the planet, and killing entire ecosystems.

Even so, one of these days (and not in the too distant future), the ability to extract oil profitably will come to an end. And so will our entire way of life, despite what dickhead cheney says.
