For the 1st time, I understand the drilling process that was used, and the shortcuts that came back to bite BP big time. BP doesn't want us to understand this but now, the cats out of the bag. I'm sure we'll hear and see more about this piece.

No one? Entire executive staff pulling down ten of millions if not hundreds of millions in bonuses and no one has the authorization?

They were sealing the well, with concrete plugs in the drilling hole. This is Halliburtin. Seems there were 3 plugs within the hole, spread out over thousands of feet. Drilling 'mud' is put between these plugs to apply pressure. Transamerica wanted to continue to fill in with this mud, below the final concrete plug. BP overruled and wanted the mud removed. This would make it easier to get to the oil later. This resulted in insufficient force to hold back the oil and gas. The concrete plugs failed and all hell broke loose.
The guy being interviewed was on the rig and was lucky to survive. He knows the whole story. BP is toast.

26. Question for the physicists here...If you jump from a ten story height |
|
into the water, how far below the surface will you go before you can start fighting your way back to the surface. That would freak me out. Seems like you'd plunge pretty far, requiring you to hold your breath a long time.
Any way to determine that, mathematically?

I'm really surprised that the impact did not kill him. I'm sure that he could not see the water, so he probably could not brace himself.
Also, I think he had a life jacket on, so that would have limited his descent in the water somewhat.
What a hell of a story that was. :-(

where they dropped the crash dummy from ten stories up and measured the impact.
The crash dummy was hurting.

33. It would slow your fall through the air, but hurt more hitting the water. |
|
Without a lot of extra material on your person, a body can slip into the water without decelerating to dramatically.
Having on a bulky life jacket would, I think, make entry more painful.
But you gotta have a life vest.
Ouch.

38. In Physics 101 I was taught that.. |
|
it depends on how calm the water is. The surface tension can vary pretty dramatically. I think paratroopers can't jump when it's too calm, for example.
He said he was ten stories up? So about 100 ft? I think the record for surviving a free fall into water is at least twice that. The Golden Gate Bridge is over 200 ft above water and people have survived that jump.

They had posted what they saw on a fishing message board. It was posted on DU and then went viral. 60 Minutes used an audio clip which I remember from that link.
