Booms to be deployed around Fairhope beaches, pier to protect against Gulf oil spill
FAIRHOPE, Ala. -- BP contractors are expected to begin deploying 12,500 feet of boom Saturday morning along the 3 miles of bayfront from the American Legion Post 199 on Mobile Street to Fairhope Yacht Club on Volanta Avenue, said Ken Eslava, Fairhope's assistant public works director.
"We got what we begged for," Eslava said. "We wanted them to skip staging booms on our beaches and go directly to deploying, and that's what they agreed to do. They went ahead and pulled the trigger. "
Also Saturday, about 1 mile of boom are expected to be deployed to protect the perimeter of the Grand Hotel Marriott Resort in Point Clear, Eslava said.
"Fairhope wants to make sure all of our waterfront is protected," Mayor Tim Kant said .
Boom was being deployed Friday at the Fort Morgan peninsula, said Phil Woods, who is overseeing the deployment of boom for the Alabama Department of Environmental Management.
There were no plans for BP to deploy booms along Daphne's 7 miles of coastline, said Chip Martin, Daphne fire marshal.
"According to the latest predictions, we're not feeling like's going to get up this far north in the bay," Martin said. "Still, we're not taking anything for granted."

In Daphne, officials were preparing for a coastal cleanup that will begin today at 9 a.m. Saturday to remove trash and debris before it becomes oiled and must be treated as hazardous material. Volunteers will meet at Village Point Park off Main Street, where they will sign up, be assigned to a group and dispatched to a spot somewhere along the city's 7 miles of shoreline, organizers said.

Also, Wolf Bay Watershed Watch was coordinating an "inland waterway cleanup" to begin at 8 a.m. Saturday at the former site of the Wolf Bay Lodge in Miflin, off Baldwin County 20. That building burned December 2008.
Organizers said that boats with captains are needed as well as crew members to pick up trash and debris along the shorelines and waterways of Wolf Bay and its tributaries.http://blog.al.com/live/2010/05/booms_fairhope_oil_spill_bp.html
