Doomsday safe-haven offered in Mojave Desert

The nuke-proof bunker will feature an atrium, gym and jail

updated 12:02 p.m. AKT, Mon., May 17, 2010
BARSTOW, Calif. - A company with a doomsday plan is taking money for what it promises will be a comfortable, nuke-proof bunker under the Mojave Desert, with an atrium, gym and jail, and sloppy joes and pearl potatoes on the menu.

Robert Vicino, who runs the Del Mar-based company called Vivos, has collected deposits on half the 132 spaces planned in the 13,000-square-foot bunker in Barstow.

The facility is among several popping up across the country as fears of doomsday have been fueled recently by strong earthquakes, terrorism and predictions of the world's end in 2012 when the ancient Mayan calendar is said to end.

3. I hate to say that I'd rather die than be in a bunker with these kooks
but I'd rather die than be locked underground in a bunker with the sorts of folks who would pay thousands to reserve such a spot.

Yes, death is preferable to many things.

6. So they're putting it in the closest town to Fort Irwin, the "National Training Center"
Edited on Mon May-17-10 06:25 PM by ET Awful
for most desert training for the Army?

SMART!

I mean sure, it's an hour or so south of Ft. Irwin, but still . . . that just doesn't strike me as the smartest place to put it :).

Plus . . . . Barstow is a pretty miserable place.

7. Oh the memories
of driving dead mans curve from Fort Irwin to Barstow to head to the Del Taco. Of course Calico is actually the closest town to Fort Irwin...but then that's a ghost town.

8. LOL . . . My memories are of the frickin' wind on base blowing over the flagpole
a couple of times a week, and that was a BIG flagpole :).

I got so wind-burned there that my face peeled just like it would if I were sunburned (and I know damn well it wasn't a sunburn because I sunblocked the hell out of myself and it was only my face, my arms were fine :).

The more important question is, if you are in Barstow, how will you tell when Doomsday arrives?

20. A *safe* haven in case of "Doomsday"? As in "the end of the world"?
Well, I remember during the first Gulf War people were doing a booming business selling gas masks because folks were afraid Saddam was going to start raining down Scuds (with about a 250 mile range, or thereabouts) on the US from Iraq.
I guess if you've got 50 grand to throw away... go for it!

Anyone caught speaking Esperanto
Is thought crazy or headed for jail
There's peace in the wilds of West Texas
Where the sun and the sky prevail
Take no notice of the rising waters
Take no notice where the rivers run dry
They’ll be digging through the landfills
To find evidence of our great demise

There’s a changing pattern before us
And the past tells the story quite well
By the time we make it to Barstow
We’ll be more than halfway to hell

Waves of adverts that promise revival
Trinket-ware that batters the brain
The devil bought the key to Branson
Drives a backhoe and wears a gold chain
Now we’re living in the unnamed timeframe
Bets in Reno are on the human race
Woke up in another test market
With a new headache filter in place

There’s a changing pattern before us
And the past tells the story quite well
By the time we make it to Barstow
We’ll be more than halfway to hell
By the time we make it to Barstow
We’ll be more than halfway to hell
