BP siphoning off 40 pct of Gulf of Mexico oil leak
<snip>

"BP Plc (BP.L) doubled the estimate of how much oil it was managing to siphon from the leak in the Gulf of Mexico, as it lifted the total bill for the clean-up to $625 million.

BP said on Tuesday its "quick fix" mile-long siphon tube deployed on the leaking well was now collecting 40 percent of the estimated 5,000 barrels of oil flowing into the sea per day, double the 1,000 barrels it was capturing on Monday.

The updated cost of the oil spill was $175 million more than the oil major reported five days ago and includes the spill response, containment, relief well drilling, grants to the Gulf Coast States, settlements and federal costs."

1. I believe anything BP releases to the media
As much as I believe that Iraq was a threat to the United States because of Weapons of Mass destruction.

2. If BP assured me it was going to be dark at midnight,
I'd still go outside to check.

4. It's more like 8 %. They are basing number on 5k barrels/day.
Edited on Tue May-18-10 04:31 AM by Cetacea

Experts tat have reviewed the film of the pipe are estimating the leak at four to five times the BP figure.
Of course we won't know for certain how much worse it actually is as they refuse to release footage or allow independent inspectors.

6. Let's see........they're still lowballing just how much oil has been released.
Now they have the temerity to continue to use incorrect figures as to how much oil is escaping and announce how well they're doing at capturing the oil.

BP... Beyond Perception??

There better be some high up BP, Halliburton or Transocean executives doing time after this debacle! Bunch of lying &&&holes!

5,000 barrels they say? That's not what experts are saying...more like 50,000 barrels and some claim as high as 3 million per day. Other than BP and their toadies in the corporate media, few accept the 5,000 figure as being anywhere near accurate. Thus their "40%" figure is bullshit. For shits and giggles (since nobody knows...except for BP and they'll never be honest about this) let's say it's 50,000 barrelts a day, then they're scooping up about 2%, if that much. Again, their word is as dirty as the Gulf they're responsible for polluting.

11. I don't believe that.
Even if they are capturing 2,000 barrels, we would have to believe their estimate of 5,000 a day. That figure has been disputed by most every other independent estimate.

I don't believe BP on either claim.

13. And if they turn the pumps to full, they'll be able to siphon 4000% of the leak....
This could be a solution to those Peak Oil concerns....
