Jefferson County geometry teacher uses wrong example to teach angles --- assassination of President Barack Obama
By Marie Leech -- The Birmingham News
May 18, 2010, 6:30AM
and Carol Robinson --- The Birmingham News

A Jefferson County teacher picked the wrong example when he used assassinating President Barack Obama as a way to teach angles to his geometry students.

Someone alerted authorities and the Corner High School math teacher was questioned by the Secret Service, but was not taken into custody or charged with any crime.

................

Corner High geometry teacher picked the wrong example, President Barack Obama, to use in a lesson on angles. The lesson resulted in a Secret Service investigation. (AP) Sexton said he generally doesn't discuss threat cases, but confirmed his office investigated the incident. No federal charges followed the probe.

The teacher was apparently teaching his geometry students about parallel lines and angles, officials said. He used the example of where to stand and aim if shooting Obama.

7. was this a lesson from the Texas approved school books?
a little sarcasm.
Having lived since Eisenhower, I find the current anti-Obama rhetoric absolutely incredible in its openness, vile and venom. The only thing I can remember even close was the open hatred for Earl Warren.
My friend tells me that those of us who lived through the Kennedy assassination are overly concerned and sensitive about an attempt on Obama's life. I was 14 when Kennedy was killed. I can vaguely recall some of the same type talk about Kennedy at that time.

16. I know exactly how you feel, rurallib.
I don't recognize the country I grew up in anymore. I was only 10 years old when Kennedy was shot, but I still remember everything about that day as clearly as yesterday.

People who weren't alive at that time don't realize how traumatic it was for the American people to realize that a pretty popular President, could be gunned down in a street in Dallas, TX. And to add to it all we got was that completly bogus "Warren Investigation" and the "magic bullet theory" that Arlen Specter dreamed up.

My husband and I own a house in Ireland and we're considering moving back there to live out our "golden years". They have problems over there as well, but at least you don't have to put up with the hateful rhetoric and vile spewing that the Republicants are so good at dishing out.

I'm just curious if their media is as repulsive and propagandistic as ours?

I know Japan's media is a disgusting mess......

Anyway, I love Ireland.....ooooo, if I could move there..... :loveya:

18. Yeah, I wwas born when Truman was president
I can still remember my mom saying in 1958 or 59 ...

that she didn't agree with Eisenhower, "but he's my president."
She was a lifelong Democrat who said it felt like she elected Truman singlehandedly (she was in Mississippi at the time) and voted for Stevenson. I was too young to remember those campaigns, but if the later years were any indication, she worked like hell for 'em too.

11. He SHOULD be fired
If that's the extent of his judgment, he has no business educating anyone with it. And I'd say that no matter who the assassination target was.

Now here's a fun way to teach angles: I saw a quiz show where five pies were sliced at the geometric angles, and the contestants had to identify which one was acute, obtuse, etc.!

He was still using the act of commiting murder to a human being to get his point across.

Fire his stupid ass. Then talk about criminal charges.

27. In my many years in education - I can not recall a time that a teacher would
even think that such an example would be okay. Regardless of how much enmity there might be toward a president. Welcome to the Glen Beck/Tea Party era. The amplify crazy to the point that some (weak) people think that this is the new normal - per acceptable.

Not only is the event disgusting - but also are the public/society-level verbal norming (per the crazy teabaggers and fox news, rush, and so on) that a public employee wouldn't think before such a lesson that this would be problematic. The rightwing echo chamber strikes again.
