Anti-Arizona Cities Issue IDs to Illegal Immigrants
Anti-Arizona Cities Issue IDs to Illegal Immigrants
Tuesday, May 18, 2010

Unlike the state of Arizona, which is trying to crackdown on illegal immigration by requiring anyone stopped by police to show proof of legal status, some cities on the East and West Coast are dispensing IDs to help undocumented individuals become part of their local communities.

Three cities in New Jersey—New Haven, Trenton and Princeton—have adopted ordinances allowing local groups to issue ID cards to illegal immigrants, which helps them gain access to services. Other communities in the state may do the same. Meanwhile, in California, San Francisco already has a program in which city officials dispense IDs to the undocumented population, and Oakland is in the process of doing something similar.

2. Encouraging law breaking isn't something to be celebrated.
The irony is that illegal immigration causes bigotry because it is so rampant in the Hispanic community that people then look at all Hispanics with a skeptical eye.

If there were no illegal immigration then Hispanic citizens would get no grief. It is the law breaking and acceptance of law breaking in that community that stigmatizes it.

"It is the law breaking and acceptance of law breaking in that community that stigmatizes it..."

Like drivers who do sixty-five in a sixty-zoned stretch of highway. Not that law abiding citizens would ever, ever do that.

Illegality.

With speed limits there is variability in the mechanisms that gauge speed therefore there is some leeway in enforcement. Also it is extremely difficult to keep your foot at the exact height to generate a particular speed. And if we only concentrated on how fast we were going to the exclusion of all else we would not be paying enough attention to the road.

14. If citizens speed, they receive tickets.
If illegals are found, they are deported.

There - does that shut up that insipid talking point once and for all?

Bless your little heart.
Not really... I've never heard of someone getting a ticket for doing 56mph in a 55 zone.

9. Fail. That's how illegal immigration is presented to us, but it isn't the case.
I know plenty of illegals from Mexico and El Salvador--and just as many from India (my ex is Indian and was illegal for some time), Malaysia, and Singapore.

GFWIW, I'm an Arizonan who hates SB 1070 and Guv. Brewer.

16. But see how enforcement of illegal immigration does hit certain races?
Enforcement may look like bigotry but that is because it is where the illegality runs most rampant.

If you honestly believe this isn't unadulterated racism.

18. Most ethnic studies classes in Arizona will stand.
It is just the ones that are proponents of radical ideas that will be shut down. Apparently there are some classes teaching that since parts of the US were taken from Mexico that they have they right to take it back by overthrowing the government. This is what some official from Arizona told Chris Matthews on hardball. You gotta admit that is kind of crazy talk.

20. If you people care so much for the rule of law...
why are you pissing on the Constitution?

I mean, it seems the government has more to fear from the neo-nazi types who would shred the constitution, then from ethnic studies classes.

Well if you get pulled over for speeding I suggest you try that one and see if it works.

29. Define, please, "reason to believe" regarding immigration status (as SB 1070 states) and "radical."
Please frame both with proper deference to the US Constitution.

23. I totally agree.........
to issue IDs to people KNOWN to be illegal is NOT the right thing to do. Enabling illegals to get services designed for citizens - or at least those here legally - only fuels the hatred and bigotry, IMHO.

15. How does this "backlash" affect Arizonians?
I doubt they give a shit if Trenton or San Francisco issue cards to their illegal immigrants. Their concern is for their own state.

3. Aren't New Haven, Trenton, Princeton and San Francisco facilitating fraud?
How can granting illegals access to "benefits" to which they are not entitled be anything other than fraud against the agencies administering those benefits? Are the benefits municipal only? Does the eligibility language specifically allow distribution to illegals?

6. No. There's no fraud involved with taking out a library card, cashing a valid check, or picking up
a package at the post office. All of those 'services' require an ID.

8. If municipal services are the extent of it, maybe there's no fraud.
If these cards allow illegals access to state or federal benefits, that's out and out fraud.

I wonder whether the cards identify the holder as an illegal alien?

Also, another approach to this issue is exemplified by Norristown, Pa. (outside Philly), which accepts Mexican consular ID cards as an acceptable form of ID.

edit: New Haven, at least, has been doing this for years; it is not a response to the Arizona law.

26. Next-door New Mexico already issues drivers licenses to illegal immigrants.
That's probably more of a concern for Arizona than what cities that are hundreds or thousands of miles away are doing.
