Campbell Brown to leave CNN
After an early report from Mediaite, Brian Stelter at the NYT is confirming on the Media Decoder blog that CNN's 8 p.m. anchor Campbell Brown, whose show bears her name, will be leaving the cable network. No word as of when, exactly, she'll take off. Her departure comes on the heels of reports of plummeting ratings at CNN, and prescriptions for how to fix the ailing network. More from the NYT after the jump.

Ms. Brown was anchoring in arguably the toughest time slot in cable news, 8 o’clock Eastern, the same time that Fox News Channel’s Bill O’Reilly and MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann go head-to-head. Compared to those opinion-oriented shows, her news show was largely an afterthought, at least in the nightly ratings match-up.

The Nielsen Company’s ratings show that “Campbell Brown” has attracted an average of 591,000 viewers so far this year, while “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” has averaged 1.03 million and Fox’s “The O’Reilly Factor” has averaged 3.34 million.

Nancy Grace, who hosts a tabloid-style crime and justice talk show on CNN’s sister channel, HLN, at that hour, also regularly out-rated Ms. Brown, with an average of 724,000 viewers so far this year.

1. Maybe David Shuster from MSNBC? He auditioned for a show on CNN not
long ago and was put on leave from MSNBC because of it.

8. Good guess
Also Michel Martin has been out for several days at "Tell Me More". She taped the pilot with Shuster.

Possible connection, or just a vacation for Martin? Maybe just the latter, but I've noticed that Alison Keyes hasn't been saying much about being in for Martin, she acts as though she's the host. Maybe she is?

15. Coincidentally, CNN's Jon Klein, NBC and Comcast exects all got Shuster petition THE SAME DAY
along with a 15 pages of comments by petition signers.[br />Our PUNISH DAVID SHUSTER WITH HIS OWN SHOW! FaceBook Group is determined to see Shuster back and holding politicians, wingnuts and spinmeisters feet to the fire.
I did a post here about his plight a couple of days ago.

3. it would suck if schuster went up against olbermann. considering he subbed for him sometimes.
but if he actually gets his own show.... he does deserve it. wonder where campbell brown will go now. she left nbc and went over there. what's left?

16. It might mean KO would have to change things up a bit
and it might be time. I know that's blasphemy, but would progressive viewers really complain about actually having two excellent hosts to choose from, especially when Countdown re-airs an hour later?

5. Probably eye candy for her husband's senate campaign
CNN loses another liberal :sarcasm:. Their last hire was from redstate.com. I predict Brown's replacement will be from freeperville.

18. time for her to get pregnant again.. the press loves the "little wimmin-folk" to be
"great with child" in the photo-ops, and since she's considered to be attractive, maybe he'll grow out his hair a bit, so the press can conjure up the comparisons to the young kennedy family..:puke:

To me he'll always be PeeWee:

CNN ought to bring in Ted Turner to resurrect their company.
