First-Grader Suspended Over Yearbook Comment

YUBA CITY (CBS13) ― A first-grader from Yuba City has been suspended from school for a day after scratching out a picture and writing a comment in her own yearbook.

Natalie Day did not go to school today after she was suspended for "disruption". The suspension paper says she scratched off the picture of a classmate in her own yearbook and wrote the classmate's name next to it and "because she is rude."

Natalie's mother, Crystal Ledger says her daughter has been bullied by the classmate all year, but admits that Natalie had once told the girl she would beat her up. Crystal says she even asked that her daughter be moved to another class.

The superintendent of Yuba City Unified School District says there are other elements to the situation, but would not elaborate. She says other "relevant information" may not have been on the suspension form but may have been verbally told to Natalie's parents.

Crystal says that is not true.

1. Of course. When kids fight back against bullies
(even in just their own mind) they're suddenly the bad guys. Keep blaming the victims and you'll keep breeding more Jonesboros and Columbines.

21. quaker-like nonviolence is the only acceptable behavior here
In Texas if you hit another child, even if it is in self defense, you must be separated from the rest of the students, through detention (at the least), or some other alternative placement.

It is to protect the children. Hitting is not allowed, even as a reaction to being hit.

7. Schools can go hog-wild with the suspensions.
Just found out that our 17 yr. old nephew received an in-school suspension last Friday along with 4 other classmates, for wearing their junior class t-shirt instead of the uniform shirt. All 5 of them were suspended.

Needless to say, my sister is transferring him to public high school for his senior year. Apparently quite a few students are leaving the school because of frivolous suspensions and rules which have nothing to do with learning, just being overbearing.

12. "there are other elements to the situation"
Read: We're only hearing one side of the story, the school doesn't comment as a matter of policy.

17. Depending upon the political position you take, I have seen that used here.
Remember during the primaries when anything anti-Obama or pro-Hillary was offensive?

16. It's not the age, it's the smarts
My grand daughter is in 1st grade and already reads on a 7th grade level. my grand daughter's case is rare but kids reading well in 1st grade not so rare these days if they have a good teacher.

20. The news has really gone downhill in recent years
I'm pretty sure these folks can work all this out on their own, without my help or opinion, and I'm also pretty sure that the rest of aren't going to learn anything useful from the press accounts

Frickin lazy ass reporters ...
