From blogger
Ed Brayton, I learned that
Douglas Hughes, a candidate for governor of California,
advocates creating a separate island community for pedophiles to reside in upon release from prison: (bold/italics his)
As governor I will introduce legislation to impose mandatory expulsion of convicted pedophiles from the State of California as a condition of release from prison.
Pedophiles in the State of California will have three (3) choices:
1. Leave our State of California permanently;
2. Live on Santa Rosa Island (a self supporting community for pedophiles and sexual offenders);
3. Remain in prison for life;
Option number 1 is pretty ineffective just like any sex offender registries in the US. If said offender is allowed to live in any 49 states or anywhere except California, what's there to prevent recidivism?
Mr. Hughes expands on point 2 that Santa Rosa Island has been abandoned for many years and that a lot of money will be saved by making it an outdoors prison for convicted child molesters:
Santa Rosa Island is the island that will be used as a “Pedophile Island”. Santa Rosa Island is part of the Channel Islands off the coast of California. Santa Rosa Island was a cattle ranch until 1994. As pedophile “Island “it will be used for farming and ranching to sustain its occupants. Santa Rosa Island is the second farthest out of the Channel Islands. It currently is deserted and used as a state and federal park. The maintenance of Santa Rosa Island is a waste of taxpayer’s money. Most of the visitors who go there are Park Rangers or environmentalists, not the general public. So using it as a pedophile island will not cost the taxpayers any additional money. Millions of dollars will be saved by the elimination of the current prison and probation system in place for pedophiles.
Among Hughes' other positions:
-
Opposes death penalty because it's too costly and somehow immoral.
-
Proposes labor program and drug treatment for homeless Californians.
- Regarding the budget and economy, Hughes
goes into a big ol' rant about debt, taxes, and capitalism. He proposes a libertarian system of education budgeting in which parents and teachers control K-12 budgets and college students work to pay tuition.
- Hughes, in
education, wants to close the Department of Education and opposes teachers' unions. He wants parents to be able to choose and hire teachers.
-
Tougher control of the California/Mexico border...including Minutemen!
- For illegal immigrants, a
Green Card program for a path to citizenship provided said immigrant stays out of trouble with the law and keeps his/her children out of trouble too.
-
Anyone seeking a marriage license "will be required to have premarital counseling for ninety days and a full one year engagement. Preferably two years."
- Government
should not run health insurance. For a more competitive insurance environment, people should be able to buy any out-of-state insurance.
- According to his
mission statement, Hughes is running on a platform of child safety and employment.
According to the
League of Women Voters, Hughes is a Republican and 73-year-old small business owner from Fountain Valley. Based on what I read on these websites, Hughes seems even more conservative than the current Republican frontrunners for California, Steve Poizner and Meg Whitman, both of whom have been accusing each other of betraying the Republican platform.
