Political novice Rand Paul cruised to victory in Kentucky's GOP Senate race Tuesday, delivering the anti-establishment "tea party" movement its biggest win in the midterm elections. He defeated the Republican Party leaders' handpicked candidate, Trey Grayson. Early returns showed Paul with a double-digit lead.

Even as the polls closed in Kentucky, final votes were being cast in key contests in other states where voter discontent was the dominant theme.

In Pennsylvania, five-term Sen. Arlen Specter was fighting for his political survival in the Democratic primary against Rep. Joe Sestak in a race that most experts said remained too close to call. In the southwestern part of the state, Republican Tim Burns and Democrat Mark Critz appeared neck-and-neck while jockeying to succeed the late Rep. John P. Murtha in a closely watched special election..

In Arkansas, embattled Sen. Blanche Lincoln was hoping to secure enough votes to avoid a runoff election with Democratic challenger Lt. Gov. Bill Halter — but that prospect looked less than promising late Tuesday.
