I lived about fifty miles north of Seattle at the time, and it sounded like someone hit the side of the house with a sledgehammer. Later I turned on the TV, and found out what happened.
My dad, living near Portland, OR, still has a milk jug almost full of ash from that time. He's given out small samples of it to visitors from back East.

The view of Mt. St. Helens from here is amazing -- such a flat top, like a giant scythe sheared off the point.
