Fresno, California Group protests Hate Radio station KMJ, May 20th at 11am
Edited on Wed May-19-10 08:10 AM by annm4peace
A new community group, Citizens for Accountability and Civility in Media is asking KMJ-AM Radio to make changes in their programming to benefit the community. They will hold a press conference on Thursday at 11:00 AM and welcome supporters.

See the press release below.

Citizens for Civility & Accountability in Media

PRESS CONFERENCE

Date: Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Time: 11:00 am

Location: Holiday Inn

1055 Van Ness Avenue

Fresno California , 93721

2nd Floor Conference Room

Topic: Citizens for Civility & Accountability in Media is holding a press conference regarding the following concerns:

We are calling on radio station KMJ-AM to alter their programming

in order to curtail practices that we believe to be damaging to

our social fabric and to civility in public discourse. While we agree the

government must protect the rights of free speech, we also believe that

we, the members of this community, have a right to speak out against

hate speech.

We are specifically concerned about the 90-plus hours of primetime

programming comprising the shows of Rush Limbaugh, Sean

Hannity, Mark Levine, Glenn Beck, Inga Barks, Ray Appleton and others.

This kind of unreasoned rhetoric, which KMJ unleashes daily, has

been, and can be again, a contributor to actual acts of violence perpetrated by people urged on to extremism by the kind of programming that monopolizes KMJ’s prime-time broadcast.

As a custodian of public air space, KMJ has a responsibility larger

than making profit. They have the civic responsibility – at the very least

– to not do damage to the society that they are a part of, to promote

the idea of truthful information, respectful debate, and lawful dissent.

For more information, contact Citizens for Civility & Accountability in Media at 1584 N. Van Ness Ave., Fresno, CA 93728, 559.265.4614

Here is a little peak at the hate radio station.

1. Kudos to them...
It would be great if this started a nationwide trend and we got more balanced programming all over and fewer hours of hate speech.

7. Shit - where do you start? You want to see a monopoly on the airwaves, just come to LA.
I lost count of how many radio stations pollute the air with CONservative yammering in this market.

The ONE SINGLE SOLITARY STATION offering progressive talk is KTLK, at the bottom of the ratings, with a shitty signal and low power, that isn't even consistent. We're forced to tweezer our way through the day, around Clark Howard and whatever sports are on after hours. In 2008, for example, on the Tuesday night of the California Primary - which was HUGE, BIG-ASS national news - was overridden by a frickin' hockey game. As the polls closed out here, and all eyes from coast-to-coast turned to California, the progressive station here in L.A. had a frickin' hockey game on.

It was a DISGRACE. And they did that again and again on NUMEROUS Tuesdays throughout campaign season. Just had to have that stupid fucking sports thing on there, when the entire rest of the country was keeping track of primary nights.

10. No kidding. Dr. Laura on KFWB.
Criminy! I remember one former news director at KFWB (I had the pleasure of working with him there once) who was offered exclusive rights to broadcast entire local horse-races. Nobody else would get 'em. The call - from "they're runninnnnnnnnnnnng!" straight through to the finish. He declined - because KFWB was ALL-NEWS-ALL-THE-TIME, and even such a coup as exclusive rights to broadcast the whole race call would interrupt the ALL-NEWS format.

Those were the days...

:(

15. Ratings=$$$
There is probably a very good reason that KTLK is "at the bottom of the ratings, with a shitty signal and low power" When you have little audience base, then no one wants to advertise with your station. No money means low quality equipment. Usually the result of lack of interest on the public’s part. Current Admin. math 1+1=3....wait...just tax more to make up the difference

8. This should be happening in EVERY market in the country.
And it should be taken to Congress as evidence of the desperate need for broadcasting reregulation - ownership, programming, EVERYTHING.

12. mmmm
It's really a simple fix. If you don't like what’s being said. Use your God given appendages and turn the knob (or push the button) that says "Off". Venezuelan, President Hugo Chavez, has the same way of thinking. "I don't like it, so out it goes" I believe the word that applies here is "fascism”. Have a good day.

If Faux staged a coup against our president in their studios, they'd be off the air, too.

17. Correct
You are correct; I will have a short stay. History, as a teacher, proves that this will all pass. I admire your convictions and if needed I'm hoping you and I would stand, side by side, to protect your right to say what you believe. Someday, someone (or some government) will try to force us all to believe in the same warped way of thinking as they do. The attempt to silence those who oppose will not/cannot happen. The principles on which this great Nation where founded are many. Freedom of Speech was top on the list.
