3. I feel bad for him--he's 80, and facing a retirement now that he apparently didn't want.
Time to ride off into the sunset with dignity.

6. He's a republican
And republicans have screwed up retirement for a generation of folks. I can't "feel bad" that he has a retirement to ride off into.

He wants some cushy appointment from Obama next year and if he plays along, he could get it.

5. I have mixed feelings on this
On the one hand, he was a soulless shill and had it coming. On the other hand, he had done a lot of good for my state (PA) and my city (Philly). Still, here's hoping Sestak will do more, and do it without being a douchewad.

10. Spectre was not the worst of the lot, had he won, I could have lived with that...
...his ego is just too fucking huge, though. In a group of 100 egomaniacs, even he stands out.

11. Regardless of how you feel about Specter and some of his votes/status/behavior
Edited on Wed May-19-10 09:00 AM by Proud Liberal Dem
Nobody can deny that him defecting last year actually ended up being pretty helpful in getting some things through (and he will perhaps be even more helpful now that he doesn't have to worry about fighting off Toomey in November). In at least some ways, Specter IMHO has been an even better Democrat than our resident so-called "Independent Democrat" Joe Lieberman- who seems to be becoming more of a douchebag every day. Should it become advantageous for "Holy Joe" to switch to the Republican Party sometime during the last two years of what should hopefully be his LAST term in office, I think he would do it in a heartbeat. :eyes: Whatever deal Obama and Biden made with Specter to get him to change Democrat seemed worth it to me when all's said and done and they fulfilled their end of the bargain by supporting him in the primary. However, the voters, of course, had a different opinion and voted in Sestak. That's just democracy in action.

Like the 'official' story of 9/11.

That's just the way it is.

31. If you're saying you personally buy the official explanation, fine...
But if a crucial aspect of your buying it necessitates categorizing any who disagree as crazy/delusional, etc, then, in the case of JFK, you're trivializing millions upon millions ... and while I do agree, and realize millions can abide complete nonsense (such as, that the US is a legitimate rep democracy), they're not off the mark in sniffing out something rotten in the 'official' dismissal re JFK's assassination

27. I'm very informed on both issues
There was a single shooter in the Kennedy assassination and there was no government conspiracy to bring down the World Trade Center...

much to the chagrin of the paranoid delusional conspiracy theorists.

And using "DLC" as a bogeyman on DU is much akin to using "ACORN" as a bogeyman on FR.

8. Specter got over 40% of the vote
Might want to show some class today, people that voted for Arlen you must assume are undecideds they don't have to vote for Sestak.

A fact I kept in mine in 2008 for people who supported a Senator from NY.

34. I agree
Sestak had the class to acknowledge, in his victory speech, that Specter had done a lot of good for PA, and gave the specific example of medical research funding (an issue area close to Sestak's heart as well).

I would ask my fellow Sestak supporters to show that kind of class as well.

(not applicable necessarily, to those Sestak opponents who continue to attack him ... they are no longer supporting Specter in that case, as Specter has said he supports Joe in defeating Toomey.)

I knew it was over. You don't have to be from PA to realize that if even the conservative side of the state didn't want him, it was buh-bye indeed. What in the world made him think that so many Democrats would vote for him anyway?

and hope he either retires to write his memoir or goes into progressive health care lobbying. (His experience with cancer made him relatively smart about health care and medical research.)
