KFC to keep Double Down sandwich on its menu

http://www.chicagobreakingbusiness.com/2010/05/kfc-to-keep-double-down-sandwich-on-its-menu.html

Fried chicken chain KFC is extending the life of its controversial and cholesterol-filled Double Down sandwich past the promotion's scheduled end date of May 23.

The company said it's keeping the sandwich on the menu because of high demand. It expects to sell its 10-millionth Double Down later this month. The sandwich skips the bun, instead putting bacon, cheese and sauce in between two pieces of chicken.
The Double Down attracted a huge amount of buzz in traditional and social media in advance of its April 12 release date. (The Tribune's own Kevin Pang called it "plain gross" and "unfathomably salty," although he noted that its calorie and fat content is lower than that of a Burger King Whopper.)

Javier Benito, KFC's executive vice president of marketing and food innovation, said "millions of Double Down fans have spoken and we won't disappoint them."

4. Now if only Chick-fil-a made those instead...
and instead of the bacon and cheese, then filled it with another chicken breast...

I know, I have a Chick-fil-a problem. I swear they dust their chicken with crack cocaine.

8. I was thinking the same thing...
when the DD first came out, however, Chick-fil-a should make it the same way as KFC... with bacon and cheese (bacon is Gods greatest gift to man :smoke: ).

If people want to damage their health ....
I don't know how you can look at a picture of the "double down" and think it's remotely healthy.

That said, if people want to ruin their health I can't think of any reason why KFC shouldn't offer it if there's a demand for the thing.

12. Chicken, couple strips of bacon, cheese. Sounds tasty to me.
Bit high on sodium and saturated fat, but with a glass of white wine, a perfect lunch. :)

15. "Ruin Their Health"
I equate people saying stuff like that with the talking head of Faux News saying that a snow-storm in February in D.C. proves that there's no global warming.

Since the DD came out, I've eaten two, averaging about one a month. It's a treat, and I respect it as such. Most of the time, I eat fairly healthy (today's lunch is curried Thai vegetable wrap). I know the DD is not healthy but at the same time I know eating one a month is probably not going to have any adverse effect on my overall health.

10. I finally tried one about a week ago.
The 3-4 people in line ahead of me were ordering DD's too.

I'd rate it as fair/okay (could use some more bacon)... something I'd eat again, but wouldn't go out of my way for.

9. Comparison with Whopper
Edited on Wed May-19-10 10:17 AM by FarCenter

DoubleDown Whopper
Calories 540 620
Fat (grams) 32 40
Protein (grams) 53 29
Carbs (grams) 11 51
Sodium (milligrams) 1380 1020

The sodium is too high. Otherwise, as a high-protein item it doesn't seem too bad.

The figures above are for an original recipie. The grilled Double Down has less fat, less carbs, and more protein.

16. I'm sure the whining from the self-appointed food nanny police has KFC laughing all the way to the
bank.

No surer way to get people to want something, than to have some self-righteous pinhead try to tell them they can't have it.

Personally, I wouldn't touch that thing, but if someone else wants it, more power to 'em.
