TAMPA - A University of South Florida research vessel left this morning to investigate how a major current in the Gulf of Mexico will spread oil from the massive spill near Louisiana to the Florida Keys and beyond.

The research vessel Bellows departed St. Petersburg at 8 a.m. for a rendezvous with the so-called loop current, a river of water in the Gulf that surges north before turning south toward the Florida Straits. From there, the current joins the Gulf Stream, which swings north toward Miami and up the east coast of the United States.

Scientists on the Bellows will also investigate the effect of dispersants used to contain the oil, said William Hogarth, dean of USF's College of Marine Science.

Oceanographers on the Bellows will also try to determine the size of the oil blob in deep water and how much of the ooze is drifting toward the loop current, Hogarth said.

BP and NOAA have been dismissing the area scientists repeatedly and I think they're about to smack back.
