WTF: London 2012 Olympics mascots unveiled
Edited on Wed May-19-10 03:17 PM by JCMach1
Organisers of the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics Wednesday unveiled the one-eyed mascots - Wenlock and Mandeville - saying they will be a big hit among children and young people.

The two animations were created from two drops of steel from a factory in Bolton, and have a single central eye, explained as a camera lens. ... http://www.khaleejtimes.com/sport/inside_sport.asp?xfile=/data/olympics/2010/May/olympics_May3.xml§ion=sports

Srsly, what is up with this? Children will be running in terror from the evil eye demons that have taken over human bodies.

68. Kang and Kodos--

"We must move forward... not backwards, not to the side, not forwards, but always whirling, whirling, whirling towards freedom."

And my favorite:

Kang: Abortions for all.

Kang: Very well, no abortions for anyone.

Kang: Hmm... Abortions for some, miniature American flags for others.

34. For the record, thalidomide -the awful drug that caused tens of thousands of birth defects
in Europe and Canada from the late fifties till early sixties- was developed by a the drug company Grunenthal in Germany.

Women and families in the United States were mostly spared that trauma by two heroic women doctors, Dr.Helen Taussig, and Francis Kelsey,MD of the FDA.

(I understand that wasn't main point of your post, but I felt compelled to add this info.)

54. I first learned about it from a British nurse who became my friend
after the birth of my first child.. She had done her nurse's training during the British "outbreak" of thalidomide babies in London.

Our son was born with a serious birth defect, and she took it upon herself to help me deal with the trauma of what I was going through..

Sheila was also the one who took me to our son for the first time...in the wee hours of the 4th day of his life..they had him tucked away in the back..away from the other babies.. She carefully unwrapped him to show me that his problem was not all that awful, and that she would be there to help me..and she was.. She attended every birthday party, and was Auntie Sheila..until we both moved away and lost touch over the years..

61. Thank god for the Sheilas of the world. For my father, born without arms, on a farm
in rural Missouri, that person was his mother. He would tell of an early memory of lying on his bed struggling to put his own shirt on while his mother and her friend stood in the doorway to the room. The friend said "Ida, why don't you help that boy!?!"
And she replied - through gritted teeth- "I am helping him"

I hope your life has turned out differently than you thought it would that night.

Moms - the strongest force in this world.

63. It did turn out well.. He's 36 now, married, and has a great career
many great doctors and lots of frustrating years, but it did work out .

I know how hard it is to raise a child to be "rough".. His doctors all said, we had to resist the temptation to help him too much, and it was very hard to see him struggle with his problems, but in the end he became strong, self reliant and in charge of his life.
In fact I had heated words with his paternal grandmother who insisted on calling him her "poor little angel"..

I reminded her that he was no one's poor little angel..he was in fact a typical bratty little boy, and we did not want her trying to make him think he needed pity. She then called him "grandma's little angel"..which we though was fine, because all grandmas think their grandkids are angels:)

69. Your son's success is surely due to your wisdom about the importance of
his learning to be independent. It was hard on you but so very worth it. I hope your son has let you know that.

My father always credited his parents for his own fortitude and self reliance. He had to pull his weight around the farm, which he left to go off to college and theological school. After serving as a chaplain in WWII he went on to pioneer early efforts for civil rights and opportunities for people who were, or became - like the war wounded- disabled. He served -beginning under President Truman - the long cause of equal rights and employment of those with disabilities, and access to buildings and education for all. To honor his having helped blaze the trail for the landmark civil rights legislation he was asked by President GHW Bush to give the invocation at the signing ceremony of the ADA in 1990. He was pictured on the front page of major newspaper accepting the signing pen with his foot. He told me later how emotional that glorious July day was, and that he was sure his mom and dad were looking down, smiling with pride, from Heaven.

46. We are about to repeal most of our Neo Con laws.
The parties agree to implement a full programme of measures to reverse the substantial erosion of civil liberties under the Labour Government and roll back state intrusion.

This will include:

A Freedom or Great Repeal Bill.
The scrapping of ID card scheme, the National Identity register, the next generation of biometric passports and the Contact Point Database.
Outlawing the finger-printing of children at school without parental permission.
The extension of the scope of the Freedom of Information Act to provide greater transparency.
Adopting the protections of the Scottish model for the DNA database.
The protection of historic freedoms through the defence of trial by jury.
The restoration of rights to non-violent protest.
The review of libel laws to protect freedom of speech.
Safeguards against the misuse of anti-terrorism legislation.
Further regulation of CCTV.
Ending of storage of internet and email records without good reason.
A new mechanism to prevent the proliferation of unnecessary new criminal offences.
