ANYONE aside from me hear CBS approached Chris Matthews to do "Face the Nation"? And he turned it down? . . .

DAVID Pietrusza's out with his Carrol & Graf book "1920: The Year of the Six Presidents." The only time six future presidents jockeyed for the White House - Coolidge, Hoover, Wilson, Harding, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt. An interesting season - Republicans outspending Dems 3-to-1 with celeb endorsements by Al Jolson and Mary Pickford, socialist Eugene V. Debs garnering a million votes from his Atlanta jail cell, first time voting for women, Ku Klux Klan involvement, prohibition taking effect, Sacco and Vanzetti, political terrorism first invading Manhattan with a bomb rocking Wall Street.

Anyway, comes now two handwritten White House notes praising it and him - from Dubya Bush and Karl Rove. Both thrilled at least one book's out on the presidency, which doesn't gas them both. The prez wrote, "I loved it a lot . . . capturing the personalities of an interesting cast of political characters . . . I am a baseball fan, like you, and look forward to reading your books based on our beloved sport." Rove's note on freebie stationery that says "The White House" says his book was also free. "The president passed it on after he'd finished it."
