SACRAMENTO, Calif. --

James Lee never thought a basketball foul would be considered a felony.

At Hardwood Palace in Rocklin, the 15-year-old was playing for the Modesto Slam-N-Jam team against Carmichael's Red Raiders, and the game became physical.

Dr. James Lee Sr. said his son was playing tight defense on a player.

"The player ended up falling out of bounds down to the left, hit his left side of his face on the wall," Lee Sr. said.

His wife, also a doctor, ran to the aid of the boy and deemed he was OK.

"The game was called by the refs and the managers of the gym. No trophies were given out …and the game was over," Lee Sr. said.

Eight months later, the Placer County district attorney filed a felony battery charge.

"My son was just playing defense and ran up on a player," Lee Sr. said. "There was no malice or aggression … taken out on this player."
