Sometimes it's tough to live in Florida

http://www.floridatoday.com/article/20100518/NEWS01/5180322/1006/Pesky+lovebugs+out+in+full+force

Love is in the air everywhere Brevardians look around.

The redheaded black flies known as lovebugs swarmed Monday for the first time this season, and experts think conditions are ripe for this year's weeklong outbreak to be especially intense in Brevard County. Whereas the past two winters have been dry, this year's season struck the right balance of moisture, providing optimal incubation for lovebug larvae.

Lovebugs -- so called because they're often caught in the act of coitus, which requires 12 1/2 hours but can keep couples locked together for days -- tend to conduct their business in the open, near parking lots and highways. In addition to light-colored surfaces -- and the opposite sex -- they're attracted to exhaust fumes.

Motorists countywide Monday reported a relentless barrage on their windshields.

I remember a story a couple of years ago about a northern couple that tried to sue the state of Florida because the lovebugs destroyed the paint on their car. LOL

2. I remember my dad washing the car every time he took it out of the garage
during love bug season, cussing a blue streak the whole time.

It's just one more reason I had no interest in living there after he died.

There are damned few bugs here in the high desert. It's wonderful to be able to sit outdoors at sunset without smelling like a Girl Scout camp.

3. I had a contract that required I drive back and forth across the state during love bug season
It was like driving through a rain storm, except all the 'rain' stuck to your car.

4. I remember one drive down I-75
I thought I was approaching a typical Florida rain storm ahead. Turns out it was a massive lovebug swarm. All the tourists would make the mistake of using the wipers...oh, boy!
