The flaws in the NYT Blumenthal story

I think it may be appropriate for the New York Times public editor to look at the paper's initial Blumenthal bombshell story.

The whole article, as I have written before, seemed like weak journalism with very little meat on its bones. There was one "smoking gun" -- the Norwalk clip. The rest of the story relied heavily on implication and suggestion and the vague claim that the idea of Blumenthal's service in Vietnam was a widely accepted part of his "public biography." . . . .

Blumenthal said he served in the Viet Nam era. He said he did say Viet Nam at first he mis-spoke but he said Viet Nam era right after that in the tape. McMahon knew this would happen and that no one would ever hear that he corrected himself later. She knew they would come out against him and say he lied. She is a POS and Blumenthal should fire back at her.

The media not only avoided coverage of Bush's obviously questionable history, they worked actively to squelch stories that started getting close to the truth.

They were absent, however, when Max Cleland got fragged by that scumbag asshole, Saxby Chambliss. They gave far too much time to the Shitboaters when John Kerry was under attack.

This is an oft repeated pattern for this people. Matthews is simply the latest. And among the first, when he swooned over Captain Codpiece on the carrier, doing dress-up.

Lesson for Liberals: The Media Is NOT Your Friend.
