Romney got really bad polling numbers in the recent Newsweek poll, yet he continues to raise huge amounts of money.

What should we make of this?

Are there interests behind Romney who are 'bankrolling' his campaign that do not square with public opinion of him as a candidate?

1. My concern is that he is the
heir apparent and the same groups that ramrodded * to fame and fortune are squarely behind Mittens now. Did you know that he called * last week re: the veto and gave him a 'hang in there' talk?

Yeech.

2. I did not know that, but I am not surprised. The more I know, the more concerned I am...
that Romney is not anything like the candidate he is trying to portray to the voting public.

Mitt has no actual beliefs.

He will SAY ANYTHING if it will help him win
whatever is is next election/position. He clearly
lied about his beliefs to win the governor's chair
in Massachusetts and he's probably lying now.

6. Bush had to be talked down after vetoing a bill?
Jesus that's hilarious. "Vetoing is just part of presidenting, George. 28% still love you."

Right Wing Christians aren't about to vote for a

5. I wouldn't bank on that one
It's probably a factor, but it's one Romney can probably overcome, particularly if he starts spending his money to educate voters.

7. I have to agree with you... I do not think they can be that flexible, even if Dobson/Falwell approve
It is a basic tenet of every RW fundamentalist evangelical group that Mormons are not really 'Christians', and that they should avoid them because they are a cult.

I just do not see Mitt winning their vote. I think many would stay home from the polls rather than vote for Romney.

12. That's silly. Their "faith" is all about grabbing power
to enforce traditional "family values"--it's not based on true Christian beliefs. Trust me, if he's the nominee, they'll vote for him, even if they cast a wary eye on Mormonism. I guaran-damn-tee it.

14. You're talking about the leadership. But the rubes...
> That's silly. Their "faith" is all about grabbing power

You're talking about the leadership, and what you say is
doubtless true for them. But they've spent decades and
billions of dollars "educating" the rubes about who to
vote for (fellow fundies) and who not to vote for (anybody
different), and they're not going to be able to turn that
propaganda warship on a dime just 'cause Mitt gets the nod.

8. That's a point that most are missing
Romney is getting a lot of his money from the Latter Day Saints. They have a lot of money. Did you all know that they have the largest geneological databse in the world?

10. Romney is one of my favorite nominees
He and Newt would be the easiest to beat. He would absolutely lose his homestate, and has flip flopped on every position he has ever taken. Right or wrong, his religion would lose him some votes too.

11. He's a Mormon. The church members represent a huge cash cow for his campaign.
As soon as I heard he'd announced, I knew he'd be one of the top fundraisers just based on that fact.
