State Rep. wants to bring
AZ immigration law to MI

A local lawmaker is hoping to bring the new immigration law passed in Arizona - and possibly its controversy - to Michigan.
Last week, Dist. 33 State Representative Kim Meltzer announced she is drafting legislation that would allow officers to ask Michigan residents for proof that they are legal immigrants if they are pulled over.
"It's not a dig against immigration, immigrants or foreigners, it's about illegal immigrants and our public safety," she said. "We're looking at legislation that enforces legal laws already."
Meltzer's legislation, which is still in the drafting phase, would mirror the law passed in Arizona on April 23. The legislation makes violating federal immigration laws a state crime, meaning illegal immigrants in violation can be arrested by local and federal law enforcement.
With the new law, an officer could ask about the immigration status of a person only during "lawful contact," such as during a traffic stop or if the officer observes them committing a crime.
