The Kennedys and their legacy are a point of pride for many of us in Massachusetts. And to judge from the star power marshaled for the Boston Pops premiere of “The Dream Lives On,” a musical look at the legacy of Ted, RFK and JFK, it seems that pride extends far beyond our borders.

Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Ed Harris and others will join Keith Lockhart, the Pops orchestra and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus for performances Tuesday and Wednesday at Symphony Hall. “The Dream Lives On: A Portrait of the Kennedy Brothers,” composed by Peter Boyer with lyricist Lynn Ahrens, takes texts from the Kennedy brothers’ speeches and weaves them into a narrative.

“This goes beyond politics,” says Lockhart. “They represented a certain ideal, one that they stuck to as a team. If you read through the text of their speeches, you can see that what they had to say went beyond the Appropriations Committee or nuclear war or anything like that. They were talking about how we should treat each other and the world around us. This is not some kind of liberal screed; that’s not the point … Abe Lincoln was a divisive figure, too, but there are things the Kennedys said that every good American can embrace.”
