What's More Stunning? The Tasteless Prank, or the Response?
You may have heard this already. In a soccer game between Lincoln (NE) East High School (largely Anglo) and Omaha South High (high percentage of Latinos), several East High students thought it would be funny as Hell to throw fake "green cards" onto the field after the game.

The story is here:

http://www.ketv.com/news/23610720/detail.html

Take a moment to read the story, and then take a moment to read the comments. I'll readily grant that many on anonymous message boards are not on their best behavior. And to be sure, some supported the actions of the school to suspend students. That said, I've quoted some of the more interesting bigotry:

"Politically correct cr#p. The white kids are always at fault. How about the 5 white kids who wore american flag shirts to school on STINKO DE MAYO and got suspended. Time to move to arizone."

"I guess freedom of speech is out the door? Everyone pissing and moaning about how bad this is should get to spend a month in south O, and see how many mexicans can speak English, deal with the same kind of racism and see how many of these poor whining cry babies showed up here and are not legal. Sorry, but if this happened to the white students, no one would say a word."

"Because illegals will come in and do those jobs for a fourth of the pay. Skilled tradesmen have to apprentice, have been to trade school, and are licensed by the city and/or state to do what they do. Illegals are doing these jobs without a license, they are illiterate, have alcohol and drug problems, and guess what?, they don't follow safety rules or building codes, they do shoddy work and then they get hurt. Then they go to our hospitals, with no insurance, and rack up millions in medical bills every year that the hospital ends up having to eat and then the hospital charges all of us Americans with insurance more. They get welfare for the kids they have here. They don't pay taxes but those kids get to go to our schools. They don't speak the language of the country they live in. And then there's all the illegals driving around without insurance. How many stories do you have to read about an illegal hit and run driver, no insurance, who knows if he's even using his real name, smashing into somebody, killing or seriously injuring them. These people are a drain on society and of no benefit to anyone except a few greedy contractors and packing houses. "

"Illegal immigrants might take away my social security and all the free government money they can on healthcare, education, foodstamps, and take jobs away from citizens and not pay taxes but they cant take this away from the american citizens.......Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

I have no interesting or eloquent conclusions to offer here. The story and quotes speak for themselves.

3. Hard to say
both are tasteless really.

But, what I think is stunning is the sad fact that we all pretty much expected such behavior and response. And that we still do.

4. With regard to the prank, here's why I called it "tasteless" and not "racist"
High School kids do really dumb things that seem funny at the time. Some are probably bigoted, and were raised by bigots. Others among the pranksters will grow up, see the world, look back on this, and wince ruefully.

Put simply, I'm trying to give the kids some benefit of the doubt

6. Yes, HS kids do dumb things.. but I have to disagree with you..
Was this ill-conceived and dumb? Yes.. Was it a racist action as well? Hell Yes! I mean, come on.. the whole point was to insult and deride with those Green cards.. that goes beyond the stupidity of normal youth..

8. The stupidity of youth is virtually boundless, but I take your point

FWIW, the students of East High are writing apology notes.

5. My response, do you mean the suspension, or the racist apologists?

7. So much for the assertions that America has entered a post-racist epoch
It will never get any better as long as racist parents continue to indoctrinate their children. Never. I believe in making pariahs out of racists by any & all means. Marginalize these people and they'll feel less emboldened to express their racism openly. Unless they want their own children to be ostracized by the rest of society, they'll stop encouraging open displays of hatred. Eventually, the cycle will be broken and the racists will assume the status of pariahs they so rightfully deserve.

10. Oh no -- far from post racist
"The uproar over a new, immigration-related law in Arizona could resound in Nebraska next year.

State Sen. Charlie Janssen of Fremont said he plans to introduce a similar bill in the Nebraska Legislature the next session, which begins in January."

http://www.ketv.com/news/23594762/detail.html

..and one response that stuck right out

"Excellent Idea! I don't care how much it costs to move them out, just get them out! They can start in my neigborhood."

Fremont, NE is also the town that brought us the measure to make it illegal to rent to illegal aliens (which has yet to be voted on, but will likely pass). The overall impact will be discrimination against Latinos because property managers will (most likely) not want to pay for the background checks or take the risk of a fine for renting to someone who may be here illegally.
