That little girl asked Michelle Obama the same question I've been hearing at school lately
I don't believe for one second that this was staged. That's a convenient and expected explanation from right wingnuts. But it's just not true.

The student shyly raised her hand and said, “My mom … she says that Barack Obama is taking everybody away that doesn’t have papers.”

Mrs. Obama replied: “Yeah, well that’s something that we have to work on, right? To make sure that people can be here with the right kind of papers, right? That’s exactly right.”

The girl then said quietly, “But my mom doesn’t have any …” and trailed off.

Mrs. Obama replied: “Well, we have to work on that. We have to fix that, and everybody’s got to work together in Congress to make sure that happens. That’s right.”

Sadly, I have heard this at school from quite a few kids. Of course I tell them no, President Obama isn't taking anyone away.

But seriously, no way was this staged. Anyone who believes that doesn't know any of these kids.

1. It's true. Rachel had a guest on a few weeks ago that said the same thing.
Now, on the one hand, "raids" have been reduced. But on the other, that is very cold comfort to people who are just "scraping by" because "reduced" does not equal "stopped".

2. I'm not going to tell a 7 year old that the president is going to take her mom away
And technically, he is not.

Kids take things so literally. If I said yes, this is true, they would picture Barack Obama coming to their house and taking their parents.

So I say no, it's not true.

3. Nonono, I mean that what you are saying in your OP is right.
It is a concern that has been raised several times before by immigrant rights supporters in regards to Obama and I do not believe for one second that it was staged.

Sorry for the confusion.

5. Should we start a clock til the first RW a-hole insists the mother be deported?
That's the outrage I've been predicting. Not that it was faked. But that it wasn't.

6. My first thought was hoping Obama would help this family
Then my second thought was how seriously that would outrage the Obama haters.

And my last thought was how sad there are no easy answers for this little girl.

8. One said to me the other day
Our school is closing. I asked where are you going to school next year. He told me the name of a school and added "If we're still here". I asked if they were moving. He said his mom told him they might have to go back to Honduras. Dad was deported last year and if Mom gets picked up they'll have to go back.

Just too sad for words, isn't it?
