So what is to be done with undocumented children?
The most recent examples are the high school students who engaged in a sit-in in the offices of John McCain, to push for passage of the DREAM Act, and now face deportation.

Some of these kids were brought here very young, perhaps when they were babies, and spent almost their entire lives in the U.S., went to school here, and have assimilated into American society about as well as anyone could expect. Some of these kids don't speak much Spanish anymore.

My vote is that since these kids are virtually American already, we might as well make it official and give them citizenship, and give them access to things like college financial aid, the ability to get work legally, and so on.

Or are you cruel enough to dump them in Ciudad Juarez where they have no social support, and possibly don't even know the language, because It's The Law!(TM)

1. "it's the law" is a convenient cover for xenophobia.

3. Indeed!
My answer to all the douchebags who keep shouting "What part of 'illegal' don't you understand?" is "What part of 'bad law' don't you understand?"

Add some fava beans and a nice Chianti... slurp-slurp-slurp!

4. I agree with you - they should have a path to citizenship
We didn't enforce the law and they as minors are not responsible for their parents breaking it.

18. Being in the country without papers is not illegal
The parents have broken no law-- it is an administrative matter. These people are not criminals.

5. It's shameful that this has gotten unrecs. They should get citizenship. Yesterday.
And access to higher education: it's good for us and good for them, a wise and just investment.

6. Give them citizenship and education, you make them into taxpayers.
Give them advanced education, and the additional tax revenue collected over their lifetime runs into the six figures.

Education is indeed an investment.

8. I believe the official tea-bagger policy is, "If they're brown, send 'em down...
If they're white, it's alright".

To put it in a nutshell.

There really isn't any middle ground.

How do they handle migrants from Guatemala and Belize?

12. Ironically, Mexico has little tolerance for illegal immigration.
People trying to jump the border from Guatemala get shot.

11. Are they absorbent? We could use them to mop up oil
But if that doesn't work, then the citizenship idea is a good second option...

14. Send them back with their parents. Many children are inconvenienced
when their parents move, by choice or not, I don't see how this is any different. Many move to countries where they don't know the language, will have no family, etc. This is no different at all. If they were born in the US, then of course they are citizens and like child citizens that have to leave the US due to parents' obligations or whatever, they can return when they are of age.

15. Do what the Progressive Caucus suggests (rather than the Palin strategy).
http://cpc.grijalva.house.gov/index.cfm?ContentID=205&ParentID=0&SectionID=93&SectionTree=93&lnk=b&ItemID=203

Support the DREAM Act or legislation that would restores states’ rights to offer in-state tuition to non-citizen students residing in their state and that would provide a path to citizenship for hardworking non-citizen youth who want to contribute fully to our society.

Ensure immigration enforcement is humane and does not violate the human rights of our communities or tear families apart.

Palin: "We're all Arizonans now. Secure the border! Secure the border! Secure the border! Secure the border!..................."
