Kevin Costner's Machine Heads to BP's Oil Spill Clean Up
Source: ABC News

Costner has been funding a team of scientists for 15 years in hopes of developing a technology to clean up massive oil spills, and his research has created a powerful centrifuge that he claims can separate oil from water and dump the oil into a holding tank.

Costner and representatives of Ocean Therapy Solutions, the firm that developed the machine, demonstrated the centrifugal device for BP officials in New Orleans last week. "I believe they'll want to do the right thing," Costner told reporters at the time.

"We've agreed to test it," BP spokesman Mark Proegler told ABCNews.com today.

Officials with Ocean Therapy Solutions have said one of their machines is capable of cleaning up to 210,000 gallons of water per day. The oil extractor leaves the water 99 percent clean of crude, the firm said in a statement.

2. Good Question...

I was thinking the same thing...Let us hope they do.

BP should not be the one who has final say it should be the EPA...We will see if that holds true.

I just thought of something...There is so much oil comming ashore he might be able to test it without anyone's permission. Who knows?

3. I heard on the news yesterday that BP authorized Costner
and Ocean Therapy Solutions to deploy up to 6 machines for a bigger test. If that goes well, they will deploy more. I'm not sure if it were an additional 10 or up to 10. Apparently Kevin's brother is the one who came up with the design and Costner has been supporting him and the company during R&D.

4. Hope it works but it is going to take hundreds of those machines.
Notice the amount is the amount of oil/water cleaned not the amount of oil removed.

By the time the oil gets to surface it tends to be in low concentrations maybe 10:1 ratio of oil and water.

Thus cleaning 210,000 gallons of oil/water likely removes maybe 21,0000 gallons of oil. That is only 500 barrels per day.

If the well continues to spew 50,000 barrels per day .... :(

Still if this thing works you could equip 100 boats with similar machines and STOP USING DISPERSANT. Majority of oil will not disperse into water and rise to the surface where it can be separated.

Hoping this works.
