I work for a major hospital in a major metro area, and was just told one of our critical Child and Family programs is going to recieve around a million dollars in cuts. My stomach is in my feet. This is just fucking horrible. This program serves some of the most needy people in the community. This is devastating. Fuck.

I ran into my friend the HS principal yesterday. He kind of opened up and talked about some of the shit he faces right now with NCLB, budget cuts etc. It is literally tearing him apart. My friend the dentist tells me lots of people forego regular check ups. On and on.
Yet at a check up with my doctor the other day she said she didn't want 'socialized' medicine "because people would be coming in every time they had a headache." Jeziz

My wife works with the developmentally disabled, as she has faithfully for 21 years. We just found out about major cuts to the program she works with, $72 million statewide. She will be lucky to keep her job and noone knows what will happen to a lot of the disabled in the program , many could wind up on the streets. It sickens me that they can always find money for war at the drop of a hat but we can't manage to take care of theist vulnerable in our society. Disgusting . :grr:

This situation is sooooooooooooooooo encoded in what goes on out there in health care: decisions that were/are made "in the trenches" having to do with things like how facilities are planned, designed and paid for, how vendors are selected, hiring practices, the medical model in general, the balkanization of professional standards of care, and quite a bit more stuff that is impossible to identify, but has more to do with who, exactly, "we" are.

Even if President Obama did everything that it is possible for him to do under these circumstances, the effect given the soil, political and "health" "care" itself, that his actions would fall on, would be something very far off from what his/our intent (might) be.

In short, the problems, HC and in general, are so fundamental, that, at this point in time, most of what is possible to do about those problems, is only tinkering around the edges.

The things that actually NEED to be done will, or will not, go on behind PRIVATE closed doors.

Our Parents as Teaches program took major hits the last few months here in Missouri. We just found out this morning that the lady who worked with her sons is no longer employed by them as they have eliminated all part-time positions. Everywhere I look we are being asked to pay more and see less benefit.

Private sector is the same way, cuts to benefits, cuts to insurance etc. I asked an older co-worker the other day, what was it like to work during a time when benefits were actually being added to encourage employees to work there, must have been an interesting time.
