I fear that the sheeple are stupid enough to elect Fred Thompson
They’ll be unable and unwilling to distinguish between his fictional portrayals of strength and competence and his true identity as a Bush loyalist, establishment Rethug. They’ll tell themselves that the Republican Party is not the problem, but Bush specifically was a bad president. They’ll vote for Thompson because he’s a no-nonsense daddy figure – just what is needed to fight the bad guys – a la the villains in “24.” This opinion will be abbetted by bootlickers like Chris Matthews, who will drool over Thompson.

Yeah, my opinion of the electorate is that low.

Given the past seven years, can you blame me?

The only way he could win is if election fraud is not dealt with...
Sure you have the nut bags who will vote blindly republican regardless, but far too many citizens from both sides of the aisle have had enough of the new republican party tactics....

3. Its true, becoming President is in large part all about impression management.

Ronald Reagan and Big Dog did it the best in my time.

4. This was predicted...
"As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron." — H. L. Mencken

5. There are still many parts that need to fall in place yet before
a good guess can even be made for '08. For example, if Hagel does decide to run as an independent - the whole dynamic could change. there's a good chance he will do just that.

Again, the idiots will not associate the Republican Party with Bush. They'll gladly vote for a "good" Republican.

6. I think he has skeletons in his closet and is using this time to ferret
them out..and quash them. Hell, maybe the employee at Luxor held one of his 'skeleton keys'? Not saying it is so, but I think they are investigating his past to see how much can surface and how much they can quash? Speculation at best, but a reason he is holding back.

9. Aside from his many other weaknesses, including cancer in remission,
I agree with you he's got some skeletons--otherwise, the GOP would have rallied around him sooner. Notice how candidates never come from out of nowhere, but spend years plotting to run, and their names are generally brought up as possible contenders long before they start showing an interest in running. We don't have that here, and that's what tells me that someone decided a long time ago that there was something that disqualified him. Like you, I think he's waiting to see if any "trouble" surfaces.

10. Of course, the OC Lincoln Club's reaction this weekend was tepid at best. . .
and Robert Novak faulted his "lackluster performance," but don't let facts get in the way of your disparaging masses of people for no reason other than your ill-informed opinion.

And you cast aspersions on fellow citizens . . .

29. You campare FDR to Bush? You think Bush is an FDR? Get real...
Being re-elected doesn't make people sheep. It's WHO we're talking about.

FDR got elected 3 times because he basically saved this country.

Bush got elected twice because he stole one election, and then used 9/11 to brainwash a majority of the SHEEPLE into voting for him again.

35. No, I think your point is useless.
Because the vast majority of Republicans would probably spout the same "sheeple" bullshit about folks who voted for FDR, and they'd be every bit as wrong as you are. It's juvenile. It's another sad attempt to dehumanize the enemy so you don't have to think about them as human beings and consider their motivations, aside from shouting "Sheeple!"

23. Me too. Most people who vote base their decision on sound bytes
If actual qualifications (or character) had anything to do with it, G W Bonehead couldn't be elected as dog catcher. But yet he won 2 terms.

I find the term "sheeple" very offensive too. Because I resent the fact that these are the uninformed morans who tally the most votes. It is not the most informed or educated that determine the outcome. It's the sheeple.

Color me jaded - I confess, wholeheartedly.

I do take issue with your comparison though.

Al Franken has written numerous books about politics, and hosted a political talk radio show for a few years.

Fred Thompson is being drafted by people who like him on Law and Order...

Al Franken is great, and I agree with him on about 95% of the issues, but I'd rather have a senator that didn't spend his early years snorting coke and writing for a scetch comedy show.

It's not that Thompson is an actor (and a politician); it's that naive and gullible people in this county (what I refer to as the Sheeple) will blur Thompson the person with Thompson the actor.

Jeezus. Is it permissible to acknowledge that there are millions of dumb people in this country who vote?

Hell, millions of people blurred Bush the retard and Bush the ass-kicking anti-terrorist fighter pilot. Politics is theatre.

19. I just love "sheeple" posts.
They remind me that my party believes that the strength of a democracy comes from the wisdom of its common people rather than the wisdom of the elites (political and/or economic.) If the American people are stupid idiots, on the whole, then George (or perhaps one of our guys or gals later on) would be justified in dispensing with these periodic "elections" that put too much power in the hands of fools.

Who came up with the lame idea of people governing themselves? Ahh, for the good ol' days of kings and queens and politburos who knew what was best for the common man over whom they ruled with wisdom and unselfishness.

25. If you don't trust the people to govern themselves, you got to
come up with an alternative - doesn't have to be monarchy. There are lots of alternatives (including, I forgot, anarchy, so I guess you don't have to come up with an alternative.) ;)

Actually, I don't think that the American people "chose" Bush in 2000 and 2004 is questionable as well. Most of them are on to Bush's antics now, according to the polls, perhaps not as quickly as the smart folks at DU, but on to him just the same.

37. I don't consider the entire electorate to be sheeple
And I never said that I don't trust the people to govern themselves. I just think that there is a massive and decisive segment of the electorate that has been de-politicized by material abundance. I have to admit that the past couple of decades have shaken my once strong faith in the intellectual foundation of the Enlightenment-- the belief in popular wisdom.

Look around you. Look at the priorities and values held by most Americans.

Look at our government and what it's doing. I'm not going to chalk all of this up to voter fraud.
