3. All week? Bummer
But being in a tornado on bike would be a helluva rush.

5. Public transportation fueled by hydroelectric power.
Almost as green (if not more), and works in all weathers.

8. Biking works in all weathers
Except for the aforementioned tornadoes.

But I wouldn't want to be in a train during a tornado either.

11. We don't have tornadoes, but we do have a lot of rain.
I'll stay with my non-petrol-consuming train, thanks.

30. Not with Studded tires
I biked to work all winter long with studded tires. I was glad when the snow was gone, I switch back to slick. I can feel the increase roll resistance when I use Studded tires instead of slicks. Go with the tire with the least studs unless you are going off road (And this is true even if you are on a dirt road i.e. on dirt roads go with the studded tires with the LEAST studs). The studs help with the ice and pack snow and on any type of road (dirt or hard pack) all you need is some additional traction NOT the traction provided by the tires with the most studs.

If you want studded tires go to Peter White Wheels, that is where I obtained my studded tires:

His Studded tire page:

9. Well, I work at home
It's hard to maneuver the bike down the hallway (especially with all the animals), so I had to just ride my bike after work instead.

14. Other: I walk to work, so I'd be increasing my carbon footprint if I biked.

Right?

But I am all for making communities more bike and walker friendly!

32. Honestly, it probably depends on your diet and the length of the trip
Bicycles are very efficient machines so if you use them you burn fewer calories.

And as much as I hate to admit it, food choices probably have more of an impact on carbon footprint than transportation choices.

The ideal diet would be locally grown organic vegetables.

But I'm too fond of pork, steak & coffee to pull that off.

33. Food choices certainly are a big part of the equation.
Edited on Sun May-23-10 11:05 AM by HuckleB
I'm not sure if we've come close to figuring out what's truly most efficient, but your point is taken.

My thought on the cycling-walking piece is that I'm not using a bicycle, helmet, etc... so I'm not using resources to produce and maintain them.

At the end of the day, I live too close to work to make cycling there make any sense. If I lived farther away, I'd cycle.

Blah. Blah. Blah.

Cheers!

15. Unemployed, so no need
Except for my two trips over the bridge, which were 1 hour car rides, I took the bike everywhere, including grocery shopping. Much much fun!

17. Damn, but it was cold, wet and windy this week
In addition, I had a blow-out (tube and tire) on Thursday. I rode the 100-mile Reach the Beach cycling challenge on Saturday, Sunday Parkways on Sunday. So I only rode four times this week.

Out of the first 100 work days of the year, I have ridden 82 times.

And how was it for you?

20. It rained Monday but the other four days were great
Except for the asshole that almost hit me with a cigarette he/she threw out their window yesterday.

Would have been nice to see more bikes on the road though.

That lousy weather makes for a much clearer route. I only had a couple of people driving in "ignore," so it was a pretty good week.

24. If that's your daily commute . . .
Lessee: 3000 / 5 = 600 miles per day.

When the hell do you sleep?

But I'm guessing most of those 3,000 miles were spent on company bidness which is a different matter entirely.
