The lesson learned from Katrina ~ KEEP THE PRESS OUT!
The only time in recent history the press actually did their job was during Katrina.

Now, the full force of BP America will keep them off the shores, out of helicopters and off of boats.

1. The question isn't whether BP will try to keep the press from doing their jobs, the question is
Edited on Fri May-21-10 04:27 PM by Uncle Joe
whether the press and political leaders will allow BP to get away with it.

On edit, not just the press, but the scientists needed to analyze the severity of this gusher as well.

Thanks for the thread, boston bean.

2. Yes, Uncle Joe, will it be allowed?
I am aghast that the Coast Guard is taking orders from British Petroleum, keeping the press from filming and reporting this catastrophe.

Now corporations that have just achieved personhood themselves are restricting freedom of the press.

This is totally screwed up.

3. This is part and parcel of Homeland Security Training given to
folks who might have to respond to an emergency. I think the course is 712. I have a certificate that I sat through it. Control of information is key to the training (benevolent of course-ha!).

7. They call it single point of contact or something like that. It is
couched in terms of "rumor control." I had this training while * was fucking up the country....

5. And the Coast Guard has been designated BP's private police force.
As they demonstrated when they turned back CBS reporters - "under threat of arrest" - who wanted to photograph the oil reaching Louisiana's shore.

11. Well the oil will leak through their best efforts anyway
It's a great example of stupid. How long does BP think keeping the secret will work?

See? Just plain stupid.

14. BP has been given total control over everything:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x8384228

including being allowed to have dumped more than 600,000 gallons of toxic Corexit dispersant into the gulf; banned in Britain as too toxic; only now, after scientists have complained for over a month, is our EPA telling BP to use something else (and the dispersant is largely for cosmetic reasons only, and $$$$)
