Virginia Tech shooter's mother sought help for son - - at church

WOODBRIDGE, Va. (AP) - The mother of Virginia Tech shooter Seung-Hui Cho had for years sought help for her troubled son.

The Washington Post reports that the members and pastor at One Mind Church in Woodbridge were going to help get rid of what the pastor called a "demonic power."

But before the church could act, Cho returned to Blacksburg for his senior year at Virginia Tech. Months later he shot 32 people and himself in the worst shooting rampage by an individual in U.S. history.

The Rev. Dong Cheol Lee, minister of the Presbyterian congregation, says Cho's problem needed to be solved by spiritual power. He says Cho and his mother met with members of the congregation. Churchgoers told his mother, Hyang In Cho, that her son needed deliverance from the demonic power that was afflicting him. The pastor said the churchgoers were helping several people like Cho.

Now that is the scariest thing I've read in awhile...

Certainly whatever ailed Cho must have seemed demonic. Mental health issues and particularly psychosis is a scary thing. Before I actually encountered any actual psychosis sufferers, I was prone to the belief that they just needed lots of understanding and therapy. Having seen psychosis first hand, I came to realize that it is really quite untractable to normal interactions, there really is something organic wrong, and ... trying to cast out demons just ain't gonna cut it in terms of healing the person.

18. True, that does sound scary to me also, but keep in mind

that fundies often blame demon-possession for whatever they can't fix, hoping for a magic incantation to make it all better. Growing up, I heard "demon-possession" as the cause for my stomachaches, my bad attitude, my mother's cancer, my friend's dyslexia, and rock music, among other things.

So it may not really be "several people like Cho." Who knows? We can only hope it's some of the more innocuous forms of demon-possession. :eyes:

I hope that when the medical and police examiners are through with his body they dump it out in the Atlantic Ocean to be fed to the sharks. He must not get a dignified burial.

"WASHINGTON - The gunman who killed 32 people at Virginia Tech failed to get the mental health treatment ordered by a judge who declared him an imminent threat to himself and others, a newspaper reported Monday.


Seung-Hui Cho was found "mentally ill and in need of hospitalization" in December 2005, according to court papers. A judge ordered him into involuntary outpatient treatment.

However, neither the court nor community mental health officials followed up on the judge's order, and Cho didn't get the treatment, The Washington Post reported, citing unidentified authorities who have seen Cho's medical files."
