Detroit Free Press: Chrysler to hire 1,100 workers at Jeep plant
Chrysler celebrates new Jeep and refitted plant
BY GREG GARDNER
FREE PRESS BUSINESS WRITER

Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne today said the company would hire 1,100 workers for a second shift at Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit over the summer.
The factory builds the Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Marchionne’s remarks were made at a celebration to launch production of the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee — Chrysler’s first all-new vehicle since it emerged from bankruptcy nearly a year ago.

Marchionne said “nearly all” the new jobs for the second shift, which will start July 19, will be new hires and not existing UAW workers on layoff.

About 1,700 current workers at Chrysler’s Jefferson North Plant have been building prototypes of the redesigned SUV for weeks, but those rolling off the line now will reach dealer showrooms by July.

Later today, Marchionne, Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, Detroit Mayor David Bing and Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano will commemorate the production launch.

2. I'm glad they're hiring but
why wouldn't they want more people who have been laid off? They can pay the new people less? Will they be union? Hmm...

5. See, the Laid-Off Workers would be coming in....
At the old UAW wages and benefits. The newer workers will be doing the same job starting between $11.00-$14.00 per hour with a decreased benefits package. Regardless, in Michigan....were the Unemployment rate is 14% reported about and 50% unreported in Detroit alone....these jobs are GOOD NEWS despite the lower wages. Better than being Unemployed right now.

6. I understand that - I just think
that the folks who have been let go deserve a shot to get some jobs back. It's hard to get a job as an older worker.

That is, if anyone would actually take it off the road.
