If we have a 24/7 news cycle, WHY DON'T WE GET ANY NEWS?!?
The cable news cycle is an expansion from the 5:30-6:30 news slot that the average American family got up until the early 80's. There's more time now to cover news, SO WHY DON'T THEY COVER NEWS?!?

1. Watched the SNL special on NBC last night...
Do you know why they started "Weekend Update"? Because the "news" was nothing but a joke in the 90's so they did it to get info out there. That's what Lorne Michaels said. It was REALLY bad during the Clinton WH...

Just a bunch of BULLSHIT 24/7 to distract the public. It's disgusting.

4. Do you mean the 70's?
Weekend Update started when the show started in the 70's.

6. But they did WU in the seventies
Y'know, "Jane you ignorant slut!" and "Francisco Franco is STILL dead!" and who can forget the commentaries of Father Sarducci or Roseanne Rosannadanna. I've been keeping a wary eye on 'news' since the 70's. It's been pretty much shit. Even with a fairness doctrine. At least not as blatantly abusive with a fairness doctrine. All the intelligence made the migration to the internets.

10. Jane, you ignorant slut! BWAHAHAHA!
I still use that with my best buddies. I wasn't clear...sorry. They said that they REALLY used it to spread info during the 90's because the "news" was such a joke.

5. News????
I get 24/7 weather. Even the fucking sports reports are awful now.
Bimbos delivering press releases. That's all.
When this country wakes up at seizes control of the media - I mean TAKE IT - then we have a chance. Maybe.

7. No,no -- you're the victim of a misunderstanding!
We have a 24-7 news cycle: no news, just a news cycle. The news cycle is important to corporate profits -- the news itself is just an irritant, or even a threat to those profits.

;-)

13. It's not about news, it's about entertainment!
Actual news doesn't sell advertising space. Celebrity bullshit and sensationalism sells advertising space.

19. I may have to check that out
I hate when tabloid journalism gets passed off as actual news. It used to be that the 24/7 news networks were the one place I could go to get away from that crap, now it's been completely integrated! :argh:

14. it drives me crazy too.
I hate when the "News" is repeated on CNN every 2 or 3 hours, like Anderson Cooper incessantly repeating his "specials" on rappers or whatever that get replayed a few times a week!!! C'mon already. I hate news repeats. I've even tuned in to ABC "World" news and expect to hear news stories from around the world..... silly me. you hardly get any world news except on the BBC news which I usually miss because of the time slot it's on. I mean surely there's enough news out there -- too bad we don't get any of it. And that Iraq "thing" -- it's hardly ever mentioned except to say "xx more soldiers were killed today in Baghdad..." blah blah blah....... I'm not even a news junkie and I feel this way. CNN is hardly 24 hour news. But I wish it were.

20. Cuz a 24/7 news cycle invariably degenerates into a 24/7 entertainment
cycle.
