relax, everyone. The oil spill is nothing to worry about. we will get used to it
after all, no one can do anything to stop it.
we should strive for apathetic complacency.

Those birds deserved to die, anyways. The were in the way of windfall record oil profits.

We should sit back and keep clapping our hands in thunderous applause of everyone involved, from the MMS to BP to Halliburton to Washington. They are the only ones who know what to do, and there's nothing they can do.

so we should just get used to changing our diets. No more seafood, for one thing.
Oh, and we should get used to a reduction of oxygen as all sealife dies.

really, what is wrong with us? are we a bunch of whiners? We should march right down there and start swallowing that oil until we evolve into creatures that thrive on it.

Of course, that'll take generations, but hey, what else we gonna do?

remember: Ignorance is strength, complacency is action, and you can only show you really care by being apathetic.

4. I dare anyone to tell the human inhabitants to relax
I dare anyone to tell the human inhabitants who are losing their livelyhoods, their land, their local food supply to relax.

I won't even touch on the animal life because that doesn't seem to be a priority in this new party.

Yeah, go tell those people to relax so they can mash your face like a plantain.

really are because leaks like this don't happen enough for us to know how to stop them easily. It is a technical argument, not one against being angry. It makes me MORE angry that with BP, they cut corners and now we have a huge spill that could have been prevented.

Deep sea drilling is very risky and in my opinion the risk is too much for some oil. Even heavily regulated Norway is having issues with a well right now.

Deep sea drilling is possible but the technology to stop leaks 5000 feet down have not progressed with the technology to drill that deep down. Which makes me the most angry. Why do we do deep sea drilling at all? In all countries? Do we need oil that badly? Where are the alternative energy sources? And people laughed at Jimmy Carter back then.

16. Because it is the truth. No one knows exactly how the technology
will work for some of the methods tried 5000 feet below. No amount of anger is going to change technology over night. That makes deep sea drilling worse to me, because leaks are not easy to fix. Ixtoc 1 in Mexico was 160 below the ocean and it took 9 months in 1979 to plug it. Technology came far in being able to drill further down in the ocean but it still has not addressed stopping leaks this far down because it is unusual. Engineers know how to stop leaks, it is just that things like the top kill method have never been tried 5000 feet below. WeDidIt was talking about the relief well maybe being the only solution. I don't think that is too far off an assessment.

resources and lacking state of the art technology;

31.  It was 160 feet below the ocean. 11,800 below the surface of the seabed.
Edited on Sun May-23-10 01:25 PM by Jennicut
Deepwater horizon is 5000 feet below the surface of the ocean, the well is 18,000 feet. The Deepwater horizon is much more difficult spill to deal with because of the depth of where the well was started.

32. The depth of the well has nothing to do with it...
It's the depth of the wellhead that's important.

The Ixtoc wellhead was in 160 ft of water, the Deepwater Horizon wellhead is in 5000ft of water.

17. No, it's telling people to have realistic expectations...
about the timeline for capping the well. Stamping your feet, holding your breath and demanding it happen faster won't speed up drilling of the relief well.

28. yes, they have
People have said just about everything "like that."

We are watching the effort evolving day to day. The last 24 hours there has most definitely been a push to tell people to accept this catastrophe, and the way it is being managed as inevitable, scolding and ridiculing them in condescending terms.

The "experts" plot is one tactic - the government doesn't have the expertise, the best minds are working on it, y'all are too stupid to understand this...

The "impatience" ploy is another - you people are expecting a miracle and asking for the impossible, you are being unrealistic...

The "you hate Obama" ploy is another - you just want to criticize the president to advance your own agenda...

The "chicken little" ploy is another - you people are getting hysterical and irrational and jumping to conclusions and looking at the worse case scenario...

The "grow up and accept the truth" ploy, which contradicts the previous ploy - it is going to be really horrible,m that is just the way it is and nothing can be done, so you people need to accept that and stop whining...

Of course all of the attacks in the critics are self-contradictory. If, in order to defend the administration, people need to defend privatization - which is most certainly happening - then does that not mean that the administration is in fact taking a privatization approach to the problem?

Can't have it both ways - defend the privatized approach AND deny that the administration is taking a privatized approach. Which is it? I suspect that people are not so much defending the administration as they are promoting privatization.
