Yesterday was the first Harvey Milk Day in California. Burbank among the only cities to proclaim it.
The Burbank Human Relations Council, one of the oldest civil rights organizations in Los Angeles County, persuaded the City government to declare Harvey Milk Day.

The proclamation read in part: Whereas, Harvey Milk’s contributions to the culture and history of California continues to question our commitment to equality for our fellow American Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual and Transgendered Community.

Whereas, Harvey Milk’s life is an example of triumph of non violent social change, the fight for equal rights for minorities and the personal price of political courage; I, Mayor Anja Reinke, declare May 22nd 2010 Harvey Milk Day in the City of Burbank.

Mike Chapman, who received the proclamation, told a story of many years ago attending a meeting of the City Council and the subject of “gays in Burbank” came up. Everyone seems to nod in agreement that there were no gays in Burbank. Which seemed a little odd to Mike because he was seated right next to a gay person who was, in turn, seated right next to …a gay person.

John Brady, president of BHRC, concluded the comments by saying that “This is a step in the evolution of the American culture. One that is based on equality, justice and respect for all who live here.”

1. I lived in the Bay area when he was killed. I will never forget the shock, the grief, the anger.
"Job well done, good and faithful servant."

2. So did our Council member Dr Gordon.
He was the only one who commented on the proclamation.

And Mike Nolan brother of Pat Nolan who was the Assemblyman of the time. He was in Sacramento when the news came and the entire legislature was in tears.

3. When I see and hear all the attacks on "the boomers", I just want to shout...
YOU go through all those assassinations, YOU go through night after night of seeing war in your living room, YOU watch your efforts at speaking up be turned inside out by provocateurs... YOU GO THROUGH ALL OF THAT AND SEE IF IT AFFECTS *YOU*.

All those deaths of people who gave a damn, and worked for their country. And all of us who were left in tears.

The damned waste.

9. I would like to thank everyone for commenting on my first thread.
All of you who rec'd it and shared. :hi:

BTW I wrote the proclamation.(sort of a little time saver for city staff) It was unread at City Council and the day was not mentioned either in the press or in our local blogs. Politics.

Thank you DU for giving me and the BHRC a venue to announce our little triumph in the first of an annual event.:patriot:
