My Generation Y son asked me to post this to all of you.
Edited on Mon May-07-07 04:31 PM by Breeze54
The subsequent generation, Generation Y, have been born of not only older Generation X parents,
Generation Jones members, or Generation X parents having children at a young age, but strikingly
also by younger Baby Boomers having children in second and third marriages (resulting in 10-18+
year gaps between the children).

Generation Y will have been born in the late 1980s and into the early 1990s.

He (circa 1988) insisted!!!! He's been bugging me to listen to this album/CD. (I already have though.) ;)

WAITING ON THE WORLD TO CHANGE

By John Mayer ~~ From the album ~ CONTINUUM ~ (2006)

http://www.lyricsandsongs.com/song/693456.html

Me and all my friends
We're all misunderstood
They say we stand for nothing
There's no way we ever could
Now we see everything is going wrong
With the world and those who lead it
We just feel like we don't have the means
To rise above and beat it

So we keep waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
We keep on waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
Its hard to be persistant
When we're standing at a distance
So we keep waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change

Now if we had the power
To bring our neighbors home from war
They would've never missed a Christmas
No more ribbons on the door
When you trust your television
What you get is what you got
Cuz when when the only information ooohhh,
They can bend it all they want

So while we're waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
We keep on waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
It's not that we don't care
We just know that the party's there
So we keep waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change

We're still waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
We keep on waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
One day our generation
Is gonna rule the population

So we keep on waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
Know we keep on waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
We keep on waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
Waiting on the world to change
Waiting on the world to change
Waiting on the world to change.

3. He's very welcome.
I just spent the weekend at a nephew's graduation at UF and had a wonderfultime with the youngsters from six to 24. Some of them give me hope. Add yours to the group :D

My 19 year old nephew explained the entire society by explaining the music industry to us. I was really impressed and the other youngsters understood what he was saying.

Hopefully, Generation Y will do a boatload better than the Boomers.

7. WooHoo!
Live Earth is the name for a series of concerts of pop and rock music planned to take place on Saturday July 7, 2007 to promote action to confront the global warming. The umbrella organization for the event is a new global movement under the name Save Our Selves (SOS). The intention is to present seven concerts on the same day - one concert on each of Earth's seven continents. The plans for the concerts were announced at a media event in Los Angeles on February 15, 2007 by the former Vice President of the United States Al Gore and other activist celebrities. The inspiration for promoting the cause using the vehicle of benefit concerts comes from many similar events over the past 25 years including the 1985 Live Aid concerts and the 2005 Live 8 concerts.

:woohoo:

THE HEART OF LIFE

Artist: JOHN MAYER Song: THE HEART OF LIFE Album: CONTINUUM (2006)

http://www.lyricsandsongs.com/song/768638.html

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I hate to see you cry
Lying there in that position
There's things you need to hear
So turn off your tears
And listen
Pain throws your heart to the ground
Love turns the whole thing around
No it won't all go the way it should
But I know the heart of life is good
You know, it's nothing new
Bad news never had good timing
But, then your circle of friends
Will defend the silver lining
Pain throws your heart to the ground
Love turns the whole thing around
No it won't all go the way it should
But I know the heart of life is good
Pain throws your heart to the ground
Love turns the whole thing around
Fear is a friend who's misunderstood
But I know the heart of life is good
I know it's good
Good suggestions/idea's! :thumbsup: :thumbsup:
STOP THIS TRAIN
Song Lyrics - JOHN MAYER - Album -CONTINUUM (2006)
http://www.lyricsandsongs.com/song/172392.html
...try to keep an opened mind I just can't sleep on this tonight
stop this train I want to get out and go home again
I can't take the speed it's moving in
I know I can
but honestly will someone stop this train....
...."cause now I see I'll never stop this train"
Title:
BELIEF
Artist: JOHN MAYER
Song: BELIEF
Album: CONTINUUM (2006)
http://www.lyricsandsongs.com/song/768639.html
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Is there anyone who
Ever remembers changing their mind from
The paint on a sign?
Is there anyone who really recalls
Ever breaking rank at all
For something someone yelled real loud one time

Oh, Everyone believes
In how they think it ought to be
Oh, Everyone believes
And they're not going easily

Belief is a beautiful armor
But makes for the heaviest sword
Like punching under water
You never can hit who you're trying for

Some need the exhibition
And some have to know they tried
It's the chemical weapon
For the war that's raging on inside

Oh, Everyone believes
From emptiness to everything
Oh, Everyone believes
And no ones going quietly

We're never gonna win the world
We're never gonna stop the war
We're never gonna beat this
If belief is what we're fighting for

We're never gonna win the world
We're never gonna stop the war
We're never gonna beat this
If belief is what we're fighting for

What puts a hundred thousand children in the sand
Belief can
Belief can
What puts the folded flag inside his mother's hand
Belief can
Belief can

~~ Never surrender, NO! Never!! ~~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I've been listening to this song, maybe 3 or 4 times and I'm not sure what
to make from these lyrics but they seem to hit on a good point or two.
I think Mayer is addressing the consequences of 'group think', at least
that's my take on it. And no! That isn't the only CD we own!! :P
that song expresses the feelings we all have. That's all.
The kids are acting and that's the good thing. ;)
They have to start somewhere, you know?
My Gen Y son went to his first anti-war protest with me on his birthday, in DC in 2005 and
then he voted for the 1st time and went to see his new Governor, with a group of friends!
There are kids who do give a shit and they are working to make a difference, IMHO!
23. I think it points out thing to be overcome
and it says "that's why we're waiting..."
in other words 'if we are aware that TV lies, and that a feeling of powerlessness are things to be overcome then we have a chance to make a difference." He says 'hey we're not apathetic but a significant number of us don't believe we can make a difference.' It is done in a style with strong elements of a gospel/spiritual and I think Mayer's lyrics play in that tradition. A mix of yearning for something better, a feeling of frustrated powerlessness but also an enduring hope. In ways it is a secular take on "we shall overcome someday."
And I like it - I think defining the problem and getting people focused on it is the first significant step toward the solution.
35. Hold on a second.
A 30 yr old guy is representing teens that can't vote? And these hormone charged teens are supposed to get the subtle, read-between-the-lines lyrics? My guess is that most don't get it. All they hear is this line repeated over and over..."Waiting on the World to Change".
I'm sorry, I understand that this song holds some meaning to a lot of people, but it's supposed subtly and nuance is overshadowed by it's ostensible rationalization and defeatism.
How in the hell did you come to that conclusion? :crazy:
"And these hormone charged teens are supposed to get the subtle, read-between-the-lines lyrics?"
And now you're saying that teenagers aren't capable of deep thought or understanding? :wow:
You are comical. You crack me up! :P You must be over thirty. It shows....
When I was 18 and a lot younger than that, I listened to and understood quite a wide range
of music and lyrics and it's meaning! But then again, I began reading at the age of four.
I feel sorry for you and "that minnow' guy. :hug:
44. Well....I think I got it from you.
What did you mean by this, "and remember, that the kids aren't allowed to vote...YET" Or were you referring to young felons?
And, perhaps your OP title that makes reference to teens/Gen Y gives it away.
Regardless, even if he is reresentin' 30 yr olds, his method is flawed. We are a superficial nation of fast food, fast cars, X-box, talk radio, American Idol, etc. Subtly ain't our strong suit. The few that are capable of reading between the lines are going to be outnumbered by the hordes that won't or don't.
Yes, I'm over 30. Over 40 even. I've been a teen and I have a couple teens. I have a lot of teens hanging around my house. But the number of teens I have known in my 40+ years that would get this song is small. And the number that would like it, even smaller. Sure, they are capable of deep thought or understanding. So are adults. But that doesn't mean the song works.
In fact, this discourse about the song (like many other discourses here on DU) is proof that it doesn't work. Even using direct and precise words, people are often misunderstood. Smileys notwithstanding.
39. I heard an interview with John Mayer where he explained
his approach to writing an "activist" song. He said the generation to which he is speaking doesn't respond well to being told "you must do this" or "you have to to do that". He said he wanted to be subtle and suggestive by invoking emotions rather than trying to persuade through preaching.
I didn't care much for the song until I heard him explain it that way. I think I get where he's going now.
43. My 13-year old amazes me
My son, who is an 80's/90's rock junkie, also a guitar player, called me into his room awhile ago and says "Mom, you've got to listen to this." It was Guns N Roses 'Civil War'. Of course, being a child of the 80's/90's I had heard the song before, but, because my son is very insightful, I decided to listen with "new ears". He says, "It just fits so well with what's going on today!" Here are those lyrics:
Civil War
Guns N Roses
Civil War
"What we've got here is failure to
communicate.
Some men you just can't reach...
So, you get what we had here last week,
which is the way he wants it!
Well, he gets it!
N' I don't like it any more than you men." *
Look at your young men fighting
Look at your women crying
Look at your young men dying
The way they've always done before
Look at the hate we're breeding
Look at the fear we're feeding
Look at the lives we're leading
The way we've always done before
My hands are tied
The billions shift from side to side
And the wars go on with brainwashed pride
For the love of God and our human rights
And all these things are swept aside
By bloody hands time can't deny
And are washed away by your genocide
And history hides the lies of our civil wars
D'you wear a black armband
When they shot the man
Who said "Peace could last forever"
And in my first memories
They shot Kennedy
I went numb when I learned to see
So I never fell for Vietnam
We got the wall of D.C. to remind us all
That you can't trust freedom
When it's not in your hands
When everybody's fightin'
For their promised land
And
I don't need your civil war
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor
Your power hungry sellin' soldiers
In a human grocery store
Ain't that fresh
I don't need your civil war
Look at the shoes your filling
Look at the blood we're spilling
Look at the world we're killing
The way we've always done before
Look in the doubt we've wallowed
Look at the leaders we've followed
Look at the lies we've swallowed
And I don't want to hear no more
My hands are tied
For all I've seen has changed my mind
But still the wars go on as the years go by
With no love of God or human rights
'Cause all these dreams are swept aside
By bloody hands of the hypnotized
Who carry the cross of homicide
And history bears the scars of our civil wars
"WE PRACTICE SELECTIVE ANNIHILATION OF MAYORS AND GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS
FOR EXAMPLE TO CREATE A VACUUM
THEN WE FILL THAT VACUUM
AS POPULAR WAR ADVANCES
PEACE IS CLOSER" **
I don't need your civil war
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor
Your power hungry sellin' soldiers
In a human grocery store
Ain't that fresh
And I don't need your civil war
I don't need your civil war
I don't need your civil war
Your power hungry sellin' soldiers
In a human grocery store
Ain't that fresh
I don't need your civil war
I don't need one more war
I don't need one more war
Whaz so civil 'bout war anyway?
So, what's a good rocker mom to do? I burned an extra copy and blared away in my car. ROCK ON!
