Why would minority businesses proactively segregate? |
|
Family members went to Arizona on vacation last year, before the law was changed. They said they experienced rank segregation in one place. It was on an Indian reservation. They were seated by the hostess and my brother looked around to find that they had been separated from their tourist group. They were taken into a room where people looked like Indians from the reservation or latinos, who looked like them. In the other room, which was nearest to the buffet, were seated all the Anglo-looking people.
In my family's group we had four who were dark-skinned and one who was very fair.
The business belonged to the Indians on the reservation. Why would they proactively segregate the groups in this manner? Is it something like Stockholm Syndrome where people just survive by recognizing the dominant opinions around them?

1. What does an "Anglo" look like? Just curious. |

4. It doesn't help to be obtuse. |

"An English-speaking person, especially a white North American who is not of Hispanic or French descent" http://education.yahoo.com/reference/dictionary/entry/Anglo

7. Right, but I've only ever been called an "Anglo" by an "English-speaking person", which is confusing |
|
If that is, indeed, the basis of the definition, then something is askew--the OP is obviously an "English-speaking person", for example.
"who is not of Hispanic or French descent"
I am 1/2 Quebecois. Still "Anglo"?

8. Not by the definition. |
|
But if you are white skinned, I doubt you would be asked to show papers in America. That's why being obtuse is not helpful.

5. This I can understand. |
|
Since I live in a right-wing community I know that the kids are reflecting the prejudices of their parents. But this is a right-wing community. Are you going to tell me that the same thing happens 100% in every American community?
But a business?

9. Probably it was a simple error in not recognizing your family members were part of the tour group. |
|
Most restaurants have a dining room for tour groups and a separate one for everybody else. This is very true in Europe, in countries that have hundreds of tourist buses running.

10. Maybe that's how the people in the surrounding community like things. |
|
Or maybe they were taking your friends to the good tables. :)
