Ethnic and Gender Studies Professor Jeered (and Cheered) at Commence Address over SB1070 comments

Political speechifying is pretty common at graduation ceremonies, especially when the policies directly effect university life. In response to Professor Soto's comments, the audience erupts in booing and jeer, and someone near the camera yells "cut your hair, bitch" and "this is Murika". Others politely clap and some begin to cheer at certain points.

Last night I heard a discussion on a national talk radio channel and callers talked about ethnic studies as if it were a national crisis. To hear people say "We've GOT TO get rid of this ethnic studies stuff. It's gonna destroy the relationship between the races in Murika!" is truly bizarre to me. Ethnic studies have been a standard part of university life for about 40 years now.

I find this unsettling.
