Why does the media think the Lost finale is such a big deal?
I watched one episode in what, 6 years, and like most of us, could not care less.

On the other hand, Sheldon gets a girlfriend tonight in the Big Bang Theory season finale, which is far more interesting than a bunch of people who can't find their way home.....

can't wait for this season to come out on dvd (some people here are only at the level of Dancing with the Stars, they can't enjoy real intellectual TV).

5. Probably the fact that it is the end of an era for BIG $$$$$$ budget
tv shows like this. Like it or hate it, the sad part for me is that cheapass lame reality tv has taken over for any creative, yet far more costly programming. Lost really may be the end of the road for such high budget ensemble shows. Apparently more than 300 people worked on that show. That, plus the not insignificant salaries of its stars, its shooting locales in Hawaii makes it pretty damned unique.

So, like it or hate it, I would still be mourning the passing of anything that passes for creative television.

17. Some or quite a bit of creative programming moved to cable, HBO, Showtime, Starz, TNT, FX, USA etc.
Personally I don't watch the networks anymore, haven't for quite some time(reality TV takeover) I catch repeats of House, Heroes, and a handful of other shows on cable channels.

6. When I was still working at the newspaper, I would put up a fight in the news meeting every time the
discussion came up to put a finale, the Oscars, a movie premiere or "watching parties" on the front page. I was usually overruled, but it made me feel better to argue it, anyway.

18. Oh, just the daily memo from corporate overlords who control all the media.
Kidding, kidding. My boss had a constantly evolving and scattershot idea of what "news" was. If a lot of people were "interested" in it, it went on the front page. And then I was the one written up for poor news sense.

8. uh . . . because it most decidedly and definitely is NOT.
This is the nature of Amerikan media: what is important is little & what is trivial is big.

I'm with you, I watched 1-3 episodes and figured out that Lost is all phony bullshit.

12. Can't say I am a fan of either show
When HULU put LOST online I watched most of the first season but I wasn't intrigued enough to keep going.

As for BBT, I find it too formulaic and not very funny. The British comedy, The IT Crowd, is more to my liking.

20. Part of the media's propaganda effort is to sell the networks shows
Dancing with the Stars, American Idol and whatever show the network deems worthy is pushed down your throat, like it or not.

They blitz it on their news programs and their affiliates are directed to do same, then they get it headlined on all the gossip shows, Extra and the like.

You will like it because the talking head said you will like it.

37. A fine example: Here in Cleveland, something happened to Lost
The last episode of Lost was Lost last night (not that I had a clue). The news on the ABC affiliate has been nothing but LOST all day.

If they are not talking about LOST, they are talking about Dancing with the Stars. Like I care.

they are in the business of gossip, celebrity, and bullshit

anything but doing what journalism used to be

Isn't it wonderful that the monopolies of the new media organizations have got us to where we are today?

I don't follow it (or TV in general), but "I don't care about it" and "nobody else does" generally aren't synonymous.

orgasms.

(Sorry, old SNL bit by Tim Kazurinsky)

I never did get into Lost, but I know lots of people did. I'm not going to get all bunged up about it.

If you don't like it, don't watch it.

I watch a lot of shows that I'm sure others will say "I hate that show" to. So what.

FWIW:
Chuck, Castle, How I Met Your Mother, Two and a Half Men, Big Bang Theory, Glee, V, Criminal Minds, Modern Family, CSI:NY, Community, The Office, CSI (no Miami-too soapy for me), FlashForward, Smallville, Caprica, Countdown and Rachel Maddow

(The DVR gets a workout.)

Maybe I missed out.

OTOH, the final episode of "Law & Order" airs tonight. Talk about the end of an era. I'm a little annoyed that the greedhead execs and producers couldn't hold it together one more season to let them go out owning the longest series run outright.

Popular, critically acclaimed with pre-defined ending point, allowing a drama of real world finality to collude with the fictional drama.
