2 more bodies found in Kan. town's ruins
By ROXANA HEGEMAN
Associated Press Writer

Rescue teams searching the rubble that was once Greensburg found two more victims and a survivor, raising the death toll from a powerful tornado that largely obliterated the small town to at least 10, authorities said Monday.

The massive tornado, an enhanced F-5 with wind estimated at 205 mph, was part of a weekend of violent storms that tore across the Plains and were also blamed for two other deaths in Kansas.

Little remained standing in Greensburg Monday but the grain elevator as the town's 1,500 residents were allowed back in to check their property. The tornado demolished every business on the main street. Churches lost their steeples, trees were stripped of their branches, and neighborhoods were flattened. Officials estimate as much as 95 percent of the town was destroyed.

One of the latest victims was found under debris in the middle of town, city administrator Steve Hewitt said. The other body was pulled from a nearby lake.

1. I wonder how many more people are missing. This is so sad.
Tornadoes, to me, are the worst because there's no time to really plan, like a hurricane, and they can be so deadly.:(

4. I was just watching the news on this. I just don't see how they
will ever rebuild that town. There is absolutely nothing left. And 1500 people are now homeless - and jobless.

I wouldn't live out there in tornado alley for anything. Did you see where the normal number of tornados for this time of year is just over 200 and so far this year we have had over 600?

Going to be a bad year.

And all this rain we just had - over 6 inches up where I am. And the Missouri river is starting to flood all over the place. I drove over the river this morning and it looks amazing. I haven't see it this high in years and years. And dirty and all full of debris. I guess there are areas that won't see the crest until Wednesday.

5. I lived in Emporia for 5 years
It got hit by tornadoes every spring and 5 or 6 people died every year. You learn to take those sirens very seriously. I also never understood how anyone could live in a trailer there. But most trailer parks did have storm shelters.

Here, people stand out in their yards and watch the storms. In Emporia, people took shelter when the sirens went off.
