US plans naval exercises with South Korea:Pentagon
Source: Breitbart.com

The US military on Monday said it will carry out anti-submarine and other naval exercises with South Korea in the "near future" after a North Korean sub sank a South Korean warship.

The announcement came after an international investigation last week concluded that a North Korean submarine fired a heavy torpedo at the Cheonan on March 26, sinking the South Korean vessel and killing 46 sailors.

The decision to conduct anti-submarine as well as maritime interdiction exercises with Seoul's military "are a result of the findings of this recent incident," Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman told reporters.

He declined to offer more details of the "important" exercises but said they would take place "in the near future."

5. I don't think so. SK is terrified of a sudden collapse of the DPRK
and 20 million Norks requiring assistance.

8. So is China - millions would go north as well

It would also open a border with a vibrant society that they would not be able to control.

7. Interesting, are you discounting the 46 dead
because they are "only asians"? Are you contending that the ship and crew never existed despite overwhelming evidence....Is it your contention that the ship was never sunk, and the crews and their families are all "in" on the cover up?

Please enlighten us as to why you would contrast this to gulf of tonkin, other then they both occurred in salt water? Since you are the one claiming at the very least a deception, surely you can supply some evidence that is not just an imaginary figment of a clouded mind?

9. Gulf of Tonkin was a contrived piece of fiction. North Korea has torpedoed
a ship, not to mention hundreds of other crazy ass events including their admission that they used to kidnap Japanese citizens from submarines.

3. Second and Fourth Fleet are in a useful location for that; Seventh rather less so.
The US has a lot of navy; it can multitask.

4. Wasn't Gates recently arguing for a reduction in the carrier fleets?
The current Navy can definitely multi-task.

I'm still of two minds about this; It seems important, if we are going to honor our commitments to our allies, that we show our determination to do so.

And yet, with the situation escalating, it seems like a bad time to do some stick-poking; although, one could certainly argue that N. Korea did some massive stick-poking in March.

I don't know; I hope for a good resolution, without war.

6. No idea re: the carriers, but agreed in all particulars otherwise
Of course there could be a hell of a lot of fleet reduction before the fleet couldn't juggle a watch on Korea and the Gulf of Texaco at the same time, but you're certainly right about the two minds aspect. I feel the same way.

10. I would rather not find out how well North Korea's nukes really work
That's the bottom line.
