away. It's on C-span now and the WH spokeperson keeps saying how they have gone over the protocals all day. It looks like Lara didn't get the memo: don't touch the royal couple.

Laura tried to grab Philip's arm, while he maintained a safe distance.

7. Well, it looked like she was trying to hold his hand or something
but it seemed to kind of freak him out, and so he maintained about a foot's worth of distance between them for the next minute.

Also, y'all should check out what she's wearing. I'm not usually one to criticize her attire because, frankly, I think she looks okay most of the time. But this looked like a Dolly Parton cast-off.

6. She did it twice. Once facing the crowd for photo and when they
were walking into the building.

5. I would imagine HM will spend most of the dinner conversing with
Nancy Reagan, seated on her right and ignorning the ignorant arsehole on her left.

Nancy Pelosi and her husband are the only Democratic guests. Apparently Harry Reid said no to the invitation.

15. As ridiculous as all the "royal protocol" is, Pickles
Edited on Mon May-07-07 06:57 PM by LibDemAlways
was, no doubt, given instructions as to how to play along so as not to offend the Queen and Prince Phillip. Why in the hell she wouldn't just do as she was told is beyond me. Maybe she was raiding the liquor cabinet this afternoon. What a rube.

18. why would touching them offend them?
Is that a part of American values? We're expected to follow THEIR customs when we visit Britian, and again when the royals visit?

21. Yep, when you invite the British Royals, a lot of protocol
nonsense goes along with it - like it or not. They don't cease being who they are when they set foot on American soil. Touching them is strictly forbidden, unless they initiate a handshake. Pickles should have listened to what she was instructed to do, or skipped the visit entirely.

Such a complete lack of class.

You don't touch anyone in those circles of government without their permission. Inappropriate touching of world leaders is Bush's trademark, as well as rushing ahead of the guest of honor. Typical boor.

28. Meh. They come to America, they should do as the Americans.
I understand some people don't like to be touched, and maybe Laura should have been sensitive to that. But the "royals" are people, not gods, and even if they were gods, they're not our gods. I see no reason to treat them any differently than any other visiting representative of another country.
