Elena Kagan's Fashion Sense: Robin Givhan and the Nominee's Legs

Now it's come to this: the way Elena Kagan sits.

In a lengthy examination of the Supreme Court nominee's seating posture – "hunched with her legs ajar" – the Washington Post fashion writer gives us a tour of Kagan's hip-length jackets, underpinnings, hosiery, shoes and jewelry, the way she "walks with authority and stands up straight," and the way she defies convention with that business with the legs.

"In photographs of Kagan sitting and chatting in various Capitol Hill offices, she doesn't appear to ever cross her legs,'' the writer says. "Her posture stands out because for so many women, when they sit, they cross . . . Kagan keeps both feet planted firmly on the ground. She does not cross her legs at the ankles either, the way so many older women do. Instead Kagan sits, in her sensible skirts, with her legs slightly apart, hands draped on her lap."

1. Oh for shit sake.
When you're short and have chubby legs you can't cross your legs! Don't ask how I know.

3. I sometimes don't cross my legs and sit as a man does. Don' t know why.
Both ways feel natural to me. My gosh are they ever going into the 'details' of her life.

4. Yet another unsubtle way to call her a lesbian -- "sensible" skirts is a nice touch
Edited on Tue May-25-10 08:13 PM by Gormy Cuss
because "sensible shoes" would be too fucking obvious.

Apparently there's also something wrong with women in authority walking like they have it too.

A PSA to these idiots like Givhan: women who cross their legs while wearing skirts are considered less professional than those who cross ankles or who have their feet planted on the ground.

7. I swear, sometimes I want to pound my own head with a rock.
Do y'all think we'll ever become a decent, respectful, cooperative species with some aberrants, or will we become just plain raving arseholes with a few kind people who try to care about what MATTERS??

10. I think the country has lost its way, and the ever growing ignorance and
rudeness is compounding daily. The senseless hatred by Limbaugh, Beck and the like, for example, do nothing to help advance the country than to pad their and their keeper's wallets.

The gullibility of the country is astounding and the flocks surrounding people like Palin, for example, as some knowledgeable person is indicative of the state of this country today.

I know some individuals that have simply tuned out the country, but I can't take that path myself, although, it's surely tempting.

As some of my friends have said and I agree, the US had a good run of it after WWII, but now greed, selfishness and the ME ME ME generation have taken it too far over the cliff.

11. Be glad, for that's all they have.
They have NO credibility on issues. All they can do is make shit up.

It's really amazing, isn't it? Shouldn't the entire Republican Party and the so-called 'conservative' movement be drowning in their own juices by now?

Good post.

12. Dear god, kill me now.
Just fucking kill me. I had so much hope for women's rights growing up in the '70's, and yet this kind of shit is still churned out on a regular basis by the self-loathing panderers to the big white dick.
